504 power steering

I fixed the stripped out yoke on a 504 that I got on trade. The lst owner had been putting nails in place of the roll pin and toasted the yoke that fastens to the steering orbiter. When I reassembled it the hydraulics just whine and the wheel will not turn either way. Any ideas? Low on fluid? How do I know what the level should be? Thanks,Ralph

Whining hydraulics sound like possibly air in the system , plugged filters, or the steering flow divider is not set right.

All references are row crop Farmall 504.

Air in system. Check level. There is an 1/8" pipe plug by the clutch pedal. Remove this and fill through the 1" pipe plug by the shifter or the large ORB plug over the IPTO until oil flows out the 1/8" port.

Plugged filters. Remove the oval plate below and in front of the brake pedals. This is where the hydraulic filters are. If it has the old school twin donuts you need to up grade. There is an IH filter that replaces this or an after market high capacity extension that uses a modern IH filter. Here is the address, I have one.

Flow divider. There is a 3 port valve under the white hood skirt on the left side (visible). There is a threaded needle valve with a roll pin through it. You can screw this in or out to vary the amount of oil to the steering. NORMALLY this is only to set the flow amount after changing a pump or filter or in COLD weather. This would be a last resort (use penetrating oil prior to adjusting or you will break the roll pin).

Place a jack under the front end and raise the tires off the ground. Turn the wheel side to side. Chances are plugged filters made you loose prime or the suction tube is leaking.

A manual will help a lot.

Good luck,
CT

Thanks Charles, after eliminating the low oil and plugged filters, we took apart the orbiter and found a broken shaft inside. Anyone have parts or another orbiter?
