Glow plugs??

Did/has anyone ever offered a better glow plug for the 460/560 diesel?? Even in high 80's Old Stinky needs atleast 2 min of glow plug heat?? After stopping the engine for 5 min you can preheat for 2 mi9n?? My 97 year old model T Ford starts much easyer! Bud.

My 504 diesel with the D-188 needs about 30-40 seconds on a cold start even in summer. It also takes about 60-90 seconds in the Louisiana winters if I do not plug in the water heater. Nature of the Beast on an indirect injection, pre-cup head diesel.

Have you checked to make sure all glow plugs are good? A bad GP may cause hard starting. Summer or winter, I can re-start w/o glow plugs. Just ALWAYS need them when cold starting.

I bypassed the normal system on mine. Used VW Golf plugs and ran a heavy wire from battery positive to a pushbutton, then from the button a seperate cable to each plug. 5-7 seconds of preheating and it starts right up in 0 degree temps.

I like to take out a glow plug and hook the wire back up plus add a ground wire and then see if if heats up red hot in about 20 seconds with all glow plugs working. If so your wiring etc is good, other wise not. If it will do that then your problem is actually the condition of the engine. Wear and build tolerences like piston protrusion, valve recession are the main issue. Injection nozzles rarely cause hard starting problem, pump could but that will be more noticable when engine is warm than cold. Static timing is a big issue. Many are set too far advanced because the automatic advance isn't working properly. They do this to make it run smooth at high speeds but is not the way to do things. Advance is adjustable and requires frequent adjusting as a rule to be correct. Just a tad of wear on the tip of that metering valve and or guide stud and it be out of wack. Luckily they are easy to adjust and easy to determine if out of adjustment. Kind of got off the glow plug subject but just thought I would throw that in.
