H Transmission Cover Installation Problem !!!!

Hello to all readers. I have a 1946 Model H & have rebuilt the transmission. Installed new detent springs under the shifter rails along with all bearings, all gears, etc. A complete component replacement. Now, I am setting about installing the top plate & this is where I have the problem! I use two hoists to lower the plate squarely onto the tractor. All three forks are aligned into proper gear slot positions. When the plate is off the tractor or raised slightly above the gasket/ seating position, all gear selections via the gear shift work. When I fully lower the plate into position, I can't move the shifter for reverse & 1st gear. All other selections work freely. Just can't move the shifter into 1st or reverse. When lowering, the shifter is in the neutral position. Can anyone tell me what I am doing wrong?!!! This really has me puzzled!

Many thanks in advance! Contact info provided............

Couple thoughts as I had the the same issue with my SH. I had to set the right side of the deck 1st and then lower the left side as I lined up the shift rails with the appropriate gear slots. This required my Dad lowering the left side as I lined things up using a flashlight and a long screwdriver. I also started with my shift rails in the neutral position and lined up the gears accordingly. This was the 4th attempt. Setting it down "squarely" didn't work for me.

I suspect that you have the shift rail on the edge of the gear slot instead of in the slot. This is assuming you put everything back in it's original place.

Couple more things to check. Are the shift rails in the correct slots? It's would be easy to mix them up if you didn't shoot pictures and label them. Same with the gears. Can you move them easily by hand with the deck off?

The shift rails were bent on my M and it took a couple attempts to finally recognize the problem. I believe the the bearings got so worn that the previous operators jammed the shifter hard enough to bend them or intentionally bent them to keep it in gear. The 5th gear shift rail in this particular tractor was bent a good 3/8". It took a torch to get it squared up.

Be sure and post back with what it took to resolved your issue.

Hi Dean: many thanks for your fast response. I tried to align the plate from the left side, not the right. No go. Many times from the top down. No go. Will try from the right side as you suggested & will advise. As far as I can tell, the forks are not bent & prior to disassembly, operated easily as you would expect them to given the years the tractor has been in service. I've had it since 1987. I will review your post again & go to the shop with renewed vigor, Sir.. Many thanks indeed.
