Looking at a 660.The engine smokes bad and uses a lot of oil Is this a common engine? or parts very scarce...thanks in advance...

Red,

If it has a diesel it has a 282, and if it has a LPG or gas engine it is a 263. These engines are the same basic engine used in the 560 except they were turned 2400 RPM in the 660 rather than 1800 RPM in the 560. Nebraska test #715 I660 Diesel 71.38 db and 80.20 pto hp, test #721 I660 Gas 71.60 db and 81.81 pto hp, and, test #722 I660 LPG 70.76 db and 81.67 pto hp. Parts are easy to come by from CaseIH or other sources.

I just assumed it was a diesel.I did not think Rpm was an issue.I do know that 560 and 706 different heads(bigger valves on 706)Thanks for the info.

To get the horsepower on the 660, they just cranked up the RPM, and added a planetary gear reduction at the rear hubs.

Geeze, mkirsch,

I think you forgot the six bladed cooling fan in the 660. Oh and don't forget the oversized radiator too.
