My IH Farmall 656 AMP light stays on, and some times it's off. What could be doing that? Bad genertaer of a lose wire? I'm also thinking of switching the generater to a alternator. Will I need different mounting brackets?
Thanks Josh

Josh - The most common cause is a failing regulator. However a failing generator or loose wiring are possibilities also.

Switching to an alternator will cost about the same as a new voltage regulator. If yours is a working tractor that's what I'd recommend.

You will need to fabricate a new (or modify the existing) pivot bracket. The adjustment bracket however will probably work as is.

It is a real bear to make up a Alt. bracket for a 6 cylinder and then ya need to do more then just hang a Alt on a 656 if it did not come from the factory . A reg. is about 35 bucks and around here getting a gen rebuilt is 45 . Wright now my Gen off my S/MTA is a t Lee's place getting a new Armature and field to be switched over to 12 V. No hassle of making brackets no hassle of mickey mousing the wiring no resistors or diode just one little resistor for the STOCK coil and two 4411 bulbs and what ever the other two bulb # are Flip the wires on the AMP gauge and on the coil and done deal . Nomore grunting trying to turn over and if 27 amps are not enough i would have always though they should have been.
