Can I drive a Farmall H into a "tall" garage?

Hello everyone! I'm sure this question has been asked before, but I didn't have any luck finding an answer.

I'm moving this summer due to a change in jobs (I'll be working for JD, actually). We were out looking for a house this morning and I keep thinking about my grandpa's Farmall H that I'll be getting in the next year or so. I'm still about a 5 hour drive away so I can't just go out an measure it. Does anyone know how high the top of the exhaust and steering wheel are off the ground (w/ average tires)?

We saw a house this morning with a third garage stall that had super high ceilings and the overhead door was 5 panels tall instead of the normal 4 panel door. Would I be able to drive it in there (or if not drive, at least push/winch it) without removing the exhaust?

Thanks for any help you can give. This place is a great wealth of knowledge! :D

I take all my muffler's off to drive into the garage. The H, SM, and SC. The A, BN, and Cub are not an issue.

I have to take the muffler off of my Farmall 504 to get into my garage as well. It"s roughly 7' 10" to the top of the muffler. I would think the H would be the same situation going into a standard door.

Yes, 7' door. I don't clamp my muffler's on for lots of reasons, so taking them off is easy. Pair of welder's gloves if the tractor has been running.

Some may not agree with me, but I have not had a bit of trouble not clamping the muffler's on. Never had one fly off, and never had one wobble around. Easy on and easy off.

ps. I do have to duck down but no crisis there either.

Just be very careful driving in and backing out, especially. We had a local farmer years ago was killed backing a tractor (460?) out of a low shed. He forgot to duck and got squeezed on the steering wheel.

You are probably going to have to take the muffler off unles you just get a short one and even then cut down the pipe above the muffler body. My Super A and A both have the pipe cut down above the miffler body so they will easily fit in and out of the basement garage which has the short 4 panel garage doors. My detached garage/shop has the 5 panel doors and My M will not fit in or out with a muffler, I put a 4" straight pipe on it and my 560 and I can't make it any taller than 18" or will be too close for comfort when entering or leaving the garage. I am only able to fit my 9000 in that garage by removing the exhaust and the steering wheel, which is why I have a quick release steering wheel on it now. Even with the steering wheel off I only have about 1/2" of clearance between the door opening and the steering column.

Emphasize what RawIn said; Be VERY very careful!! I got trapped between the low overhang and the steering wheel backing out, in my old garage, and I REALLY got trapped by the neat seat-back-rest I installed, and the overhang, when I pulled in. That stunt came close to bending me over backwards and breaking me in two.
I finally spray-painted the overhang bright fluorescent orange, so I'd see it.
It's still dangerous.

our old garage had 7' doors had to take muffler off on farmall M and mounted the muffler laying down on farmall B. Built new 40'x 60'with a 12.6'x 18' door on back and a 10'x12' and a 7'x8' on the front. No more messing around with mufflers& bending over to get into doors.

Like anything else that involves these tractors, you need to pay attention. However, if you keep alert, and don't take lazy shortcuts, you will enjoy these for a long time........

I have an arguement every summer with my kids. They insist on wearing a iPod while cutting grass. It impeads their hearing of what is going on with the machine, and it takes their mind off the task at hand. If you have to have music in your ears, then you aren't paying close attention and have no business running a dangerous piece of machinery. Ear protection is excluded from this rant.

Of course, some will disagree with me, but IMHO as always.

Once, when I bought my first Cub Farmall, I was going to load it in my stock trailer. I was watching it going up the ramps with the belly mower on it. Suddenly after the front wheels had rolled in, the muffler noise had changed. I looked up, and saw that the muffler was loose and vibrateing round, and just as luck would have it, It had vibrated to where the rain cap was pressed down against the muffler by the top of the trailer. If it had vibrated 180 the other direction, I would have ripped it off, Maybe bent/broke the muffular, and possibly bent the pipe going into the manifold enough to have broken the manifold. Watch is the word

I keep my IH "H" in my shop with a 9 ft wide and 8 ft high door. It goes in fine with a few inches to spare below the door.

Do you have a sound system in your car? Tell us you never use it.
Ear muffs and glasses are required equipment on any mower.

It will fit into a standard car garage door with the muffler off, just
duck when your going in. I made the mistake of leaving the pipe on
one day and the pipe out of the manifold ripped off. No big deal but
still frustrating

D,

I actually work for JD too in Waterloo. I have 20 old Farmalls. Guys give me a tough time all the time. I have to be careful with my IH logos and clothing when I am visiting our customers.

Where are you moving too?

Brian

I am a workshop foreman at a JD dealr, and have 2 Hs a 44 and a 39. People do look when I am driving it wearing JD overalls. My 1944 WFE Farmall H cleared under an 8" door ok, and it is on 13.6 - 38 tyres, that was at our old house, here I have to remove the silencer, duck, and don"t put my hands on top of the steering wheel! It"s that close! I have a building resource consent application in now to raise the roof on my workshop, but building regulations now have been tightend up because of the recent earthquakes.

Gordo, LOL! Yes I have a radio, and believe it or not, NO, I don't listen to it very often..........mostly the weather or traffic report in the morning on the way to work if I do at all.

My uncle used to back his M into a low barn, and I could never figure out how he managed to do it. The door isn't a problem but the hay loft in back is pretty low, only about 7-1/2' off the ground.

It looked like there was only about a foot of clearance between the seat and the joists. I just don't know how he managed it. There's no way you'd be able to push that M in there with the loader and all...

The ultimate insult is that he bought a JD2010 to replace the M... Plenty of clearance in the barn now with that low utility tractor, but still... The man grew up on an IH farm! There was an odd Massey Harris, and one Oliver, but never anything THAT shade of green!

When we built the new garage on the farm we put in a 9' door and the top of the muffler on the '52 Super M clears by about 1 inch! It was a sticky maneuver the first time we pulled it in.

I cut my muffler pipe a little shorter, and my H fits in a 7 foot tall opening easily, but you have to bend over a little to fit throught it.

Brian,

I'll be moving to the Quad City area and will be working in the Seeding group. I've worked for JD before on construction equipment in Dubuque.

My grandpa always had red equipment and now his son and grandson are JD employees. He doesn't mind :)
