656 Farmall shifting problem

Hello,
I have a 656 Farmall that has shift linkage trouble. It has had trouble for years and I have made a couple new pins for the lnkage but now it seems that the cast pieces are actually worn.
Seems like IH had an update kit for that and I was wondering if anyone had tried one of those and what kind of luck they had. I use the tractor fairly regularly. It is a 1966 vintage. Any other thoughts on cures.

The update kit was a new shaft with square pins rather than round. The one piece gate where the shift rod levers meet the shaft is changed to three pieces. The outer housing where the shift lever attaches was changed so that the slot goes all the way through to the outer end. That allows assembly without removing any pins from the shaft.

Was that kit pretty much a cure for the problem?
I know it is pretty expensive.
