Farmall H stalls

My 1946 H runs, pulling a mower, for about 10 minutes, then stalls. If I open/close the gas cap, it will then run for 2 minutes and stall again. I replaced the gas cap, but that seems to make no difference. It will also run in the barn for 45 minutes without stalling. The run/stall cycle seems to occur after the tractor warms up and has a load applied. Any ideas?

Hmmmm. A stalling problem like that is classically related to a coil and/or condenser. But, you seem to think that fuel is part of the problem. If it is, then I think a stuck float could be part of the problem. The float tang may not be set right, causing some fuel to enter the carburetor, but not enough to run the engine under load very long. Again, I would check the coil and condenser before I go into the carburetor.

Pull the drain plug out of the bottom of the carb. Lets it flow for a good 5 minutes. Catch it of course so as to look at it for water/dirt. You should get a good steady flow there. If you do not then work your way back till you find where the flow is stopped or slowed way down. Also make sure when it dies it has a good spark the will jump a 1/4 inch gap

I like old's answer. The cap may just be giving you a false sense of doing something, when it is just time that it takes getting fuel to the carb to run (through dirt) There is a screen in the fitting at the carb that is also often plugged up, and not known about. Jim

If you do not get fuel flow like what old is describing, check the inlet screen on the carb, possible clogged, Check the fuel bowl for a possible clogged passage, blow it out with compressed air OUTSIDE. Drain the tank, look inside or in the gas that you have drained to see anything that might get sucked over the outlet of the tank. If you see none of these things, You may have a carb problem or a ignition problem.

Hope this helps

(quoted from post at 12:22:26 06/05/11) My 1946 H runs, pulling a mower, for about 10 minutes, then stalls. If I open/close the gas cap, it will then run for 2 minutes and stall again. I'm going with SouthernFarmall on this one. Replace the ignition coil.

When it quits running pull off a plug wire and check for fire to your plug asap before anything cools. If there's still good fire check the fuel flow to the carburetor. Unhook the gas line at the carb and see if there's a full stream of gas from the tank. Hal

You seem focused on the gas cap. Have you tried running with the cap loose? The 'H' is a gravity type fuel feed and the cap might not be venting correctly. The vacuum created could be the problem. The next time it happens, loosen a gas line and see if there is flow. If that doesn't fix it, then I would point at the condensor or coil.

FYI: I decided to go the easy route first. I emptied the fuel tank(maybe the first time since 1946) and disassembled and cleaned everything from the tank to the carburetor. Seems to be running fine now. I guess fuel tanks should not have dirt, etc. in the bottom, nor should the last gallon or two of gas be brown. I should have thought of that sooner. Thanks again for the suggestions.
