Iregular Regular

Well I got my "new" Regular home safe. It starts and runs ok, not perfect, if I pull it, but so far have only been able to hand start once , when it was hot. I will go through all the mechanical checks when I get time (spark heat ,compression, etc)but for now wondering if my technique is off? P.O. said it starts on 2-3 cranks, and yes,I believe him ! He said:eek:pen gas,set spark 1/2 way retarded, throttle to 6 notches, choke full cold and half when warm, press impulse down, turn til impulse clicks, then crank. Sound right ? Never had a Regular or hand start only tractor before, or one with a Mag.Thanks

I always start with full retard. Don't want ANY chance of it kicking back, if they do they can hurt you even if holding crank correct.

I would not choke it any when warm. I usually crank one pull with the choke pulled and then take it off. Otherwise they will flood. And if ever pops once it will disengage the impulse and you have to reset it. It should click right near 12 o'clock on the hand crank every time. If it's not clicking it ain't gonna start.

It should start like the early F-20s. I like Cowman's technique plus I retard the Mag slightly (Approximately 15 degrees up.) When it starts, I immediately advance the mag to maximum down -- undo the 15 degrees I set it to start easier.

I will check those points first I guess, file and gap just like distributor points ?. It never even "pops" when I am cranking. Seems like flooded to me,but with that manifold designed like it is, would seem hard to flood at all. I suspect weak spark.Full retard to start ? It should start very easy if all is in order right ? At the shows the F-20s Ive seen always hit with one to two cranks.

Just went out and tried it again, full retard, full choke for only one crank and then off. Got a half-hearted puff on the second round with the crank and then nothing for the next ten or so, never did start. Hmm. Impulse does click around 12 oclock on the crank handle. Crank takes some effort, so I am assuming with out checking yet that compression is okay.

Mike,my 28 will flood easily,I turn on the gas and choke it untill the gas runs out of the carb, then I turn the gas off untill it starts, then back on.I always turn the gas off and let it run out of gas to kill the motor

From your name, I ssume you have a Super H. Take a flat belt with a twist (to turn the Regular engine the correct direction) from your Super H to the Regular and use that method to turn the Regular engine. (One person on each tractor works best) This should start it and allow you to adjust the Carb and Mag for easier crank starting.

If this is your first hand-cranked machine, make sure you take Nebraska Cowman's advise and if pops and don't start make sure you reset the impulse or most likely you may be hurt. I have a 1931 model and they are fun. I'm pretty old and I mostly pull mine to start when I can.
Good luck and have fun with it.

Well I am certainly saving money on the fitness club ! What a workout shes given me already ! Thanks for all the info and advice, I need it on this one, as it s all new to me. I will let you know when I resolve the trouble...

BINGO !!!! Sorry to keep answering my own post, but I finally got er to go ! It was a combo of all things suggested actually. Here is the process for future reference ( even my own,lol )at least on this particular tractor. Turn on gas till leaks from carb then shut gas off, set spark to 1/3 above full retard, impulse down, one crank on full choke then choke off completely, put crank at 3 oclock position and then gave a good yank, 3 cranks and she lit and stayed running, open gas and advance spark to best idle. I also did remember to reset impulse after she popped during the process. Now I can work on the tune-up and get her to start even easier and run smoother.( Hopefully ! ) Thanks guys, you really helped me on this one ! ~ Mike

Congrats!!! One more thing (Wife says I am like Columbo-Peter Fauld character) always turn your thumb back, not around the crank. That way you will not break your thumb if it does backfire.

Yep! Thanks ! I remember learning that one from my Roger Welsch books ! Got her going twice more since and am getting the hang of it ! ~ Mike
