f-12 no spark

I have a f12 that is not getting any spark. I don"t know much about magnetos. Are there any quick checks or common problems the check for? Thanks

Clean the points with some 320 wet or dry until shiny. If they're pitted I would replace them. Then see if you have fire to your plugs. Listen for the impulse coupling when cranking to hear if it is snapping. Hal

I hate to ask, but did you advance the spark enough? at least 1/3 on the advance.

El Toro is spot on. The F-4 mag is a good one, but can be cantakerous if everything isn't up to snuff. clean points, good condenser, magnet charged and impulse working. If these things are all good, then it get's deeper like coil, carbon brushes, etc.

A good question would be, did this ever run/spark? When did it quit, and what were the circumstances around it quitting?

The tractor hasn't been run in 10 years, but was running when parked. When I crank it over I do hear snapping. There is a lever that goes from the mag to the dash. Should that be at 12 or 3 o'clock? Thanks

the spark advance should be 1/3 of it's travel for starting. so, advance it all the way, and then back again. then advance 1/3 of that travel to start.

A magneto shop has the correct magnet charger.

Here's an old Wico mag off a twin cylinder garden tractor that has dead magnets. Hal

Take the magnet off, if it sticks to the side of the tractor, its fine. Instructions to recharge are in the archives, although the search function is just about worthless.

We never had a Regular we had a 10-20 for years and that lever was at 12 when we cranked it. Someone on this forum should know. Hal

More like 11oclock. What I do, is move thelever all the way to the left, as if sitting on it, then move to the right just enough for the points cover to move. All the way to the left will kill the engine by grounding out the mag. You want the mag retarded as much as possible when cranking.

If the spark is weak you may need a new coil. Hal
PS: Squirt some gas into the cyliders and see if it will fire.
