Farmall MD and SMD injection pumps

Hey guys! My MD and the SMD I am looking at both have diesel accumulating in the injection pumps. I am guessing the seals just need replaced which I have heard is upwards of $700. My question is, will it hurt the pump to just run it as is? I have been told by a couple local old timers to just run them and not worry about it but just want some other opinions. I know they SHOULD be fixed and someday I plan on it; just dont have the money right now. These tractor don't get used much...mostly just driven around a few miles every couple months to keep them running until I can get them restored. Thanks!
 
No, you can not run them while they are diluting the oil. The diesel fuel will thin the oil and it won't lubricate the pump properly.

I'm pretty sure all you need to do is get the lift pump rebuilt for that problem. When I did mine it cost $100 said and done. That was 7 years ago so it is probably twice that now.

Call the guy in Iowa and ask him prices on rebuilding the lift pump and the big pump. I wouldn't be too excited to overpay for that SMD with a known problem like that. It would certainly be a barter point.

Yes that is true, but also not entirely important. With A pumps you can shut off at the tank if you are parking it for more than a few hours. Since an A has a scavenging pump you can run it with a weak primary pump seal all day long with no problem at all. Leakage is simply picked up and returned to the tank. Just be sure to dump the pump oil and replace it if the tractor has been sitting for a while. It only takes a few ounces.
 
How do I know if I have an A pump? I always shut the fuel off after running the tractor and have been draining the excess from the pump after running the tractor each time. Like I said, I know I SHOULD get it fixed but just cant afford it right now. Thanks again!

If you can afford another plow and a SMD you can afford to fix the scavanging/lift pump.
 
Not sure if that is your place to say but I am checking into prices...any recommendations on places to have it done in IA? Someone said there was a place called "Central Diesel" but the only thing I can find it Central Plains Diesel or Central Fuel Injection Service Co...which one do I want? Thanks for the help!
 
You need to contact Central Fuel Injection in Iowa. They have a website. They rebuilt the lift pump on my SWDR9, including a new shaft, and the price was under $200. I now have no more diesel fuel diluting the oil in the injection pump.

Has a big A on the pump front cover. Typically those tractors have one, but a lot of years have passed so it may have been changed. There are 3 basic versions of your pump. The later has IH cast into the top cover, the earlier has no external markings. Fixing the seal depends on your version since they may not have packing glands for the earlier seal.

I have a couple that have to be manipulated. If it gets diluted very much, just change it. Only takes a few ounces. Use heavier oil to help with dilution problem is a good idea. Stay with 30. I'd think about the shutoff as well. It obviously has issues, but most all do.
