Farmall Super A motor rebuild.

After inspecting the motor I have found that I have a cracked block.

My (cracked) block is a 251069 r1.

I have found a 354898 r1 block. I will go inspect the block tomorrow and buy it if it looks good.

Did the 354898 r1 block have a water pump? Is this block superior to the 251069?

Am I doing the right thing by going down this route?

The water pump or that outlet are interchangable. The 898 block takes larger sleeves. 123cid measure at the o-ring opening in the bottom.

The sleeves in that 354898R1 block are 7-1/32" long and you can use an overbore kit to boost the cid to 133cid without any machining to the block. Hal

You can run a water pump if you like but the thermostat did go in the top inlet. Now that top inlet is bigger than what you have now and also that radiator had a larger outlet. So use your radiator and you can use a water pump if you like but its not neccessary.

So let me get this straight:

I don't have to use a water pump if I don't want to with this block?

If I get a water pump I have to get a thermostat.

If I get a thermostat the outlet will be bigger and I have to get a different radiator?

He is just saying that you can use it "as is" with the water pump, or you can swap the housings off of your engine onto this one and do away with the water pump. Either way will be fine. A lot of people consider the water pump an upgrade but you don't need it in most situations. "USE IT IF YOU WANT, IT WON'T HURT" is the overall statement being made.

My SA was built in early '49. First time I had to take the head off, I went into the dealer for a new head gasket. He asked me if it had a water pump or not. I said "no" and he brought out a different gasket than I took off. Turns out the gasket for my engine had larger water passage holes so there was no resistance to the thermal flow. The gasket for the water pump type engine had small passage holes, to give the pump some resistance I guess. Who ever had this tractor before I got it put in the wrong the wrong gasket. I put the correct one in with the larger holes, and noticed that it did run cooler. You will see two part #'s in the part book. If you use the water pump, you need the head gasket with the smaller holes.
