I am assembling my F-30 engine and studying the W/P set up. It obviously doesn"t have a thermostat any more. Wouldn"t it be a smart idea to block off the bypass so it doesn"t recirculate the hot water from the coolant return. I know I probably will never pull it long enough for it to overheat but, it was just a thought. What do you guys think??

No, I don't think it would be smart to block the by-pass. The water has to go somewhere. The bypass is so the water has a place to relieve the pressure when the thermostat is closed. Without a thermostat the water can go straight through. You will not have trouble overheating. IF you wanted to run the tractor in the winter and wanted it to warm up you could cover or partially cover the front of the radiator regulating the temperature yourself. Thats what the thermostat does.

I hate to disagree with a fellow Cornhusker, but I read somewhere that you should block off the bypass if you are running a F-30/W-30 without a thermostat.
I did that on my F-30 and my W-30 and they both run just fine.

I know thermostats were designed to make the engine run more efficient by bringing it up to operating temp faster. The water bypass in any cooling system is so the w/p can circulate the coolant to prevent hot spots in the cooling system when the stat is closed. Since there is no pressure in this system and you will have constant flow through the rad, I don't see a problem with pressure. There is a vent hole rifled through the stat casting to relieve any trapped air and pressure if the stat were to be closed, like all stats have. I know if I were to ever want it to warm up in the winter time I would have to fab some kind of shutter system. Thanks for all of your replies, just trying to figure out if it is a good or dumb idea.

I guess I need help understanding this. If you don't need to block the bypass when the engine is hot and the thermostat is open, why do you need to block it when the thermostat is removed?

The original thermostat has 2 valves on it and does block the bypass when it opens to the radiator. That being said I don't block mine but I do add a flat washer inside the hose to restrict the flow

That is a good idea with out completely blocking it off. The only reason I bring this up is because I know from experience, that a cooling system without a stat will over heat if it is pulled long enough and hard enough, it may not ever get pulled. Maybe if get time in the future I will sit down and find a way to modify the original stat housing to accept a detroit or cummins stat. Has any one seen an original F-30 stat recently? I'm gonna guess they were thrown out a long time ago. Thanks guys.
