Farmall Super A - Implement size

I have a Farmall Super A and I want to buy a new bush hog and box blade to use with the tractor.

The tractor currently is fitted with a 48" bush hog.

I would like some opinions on the recommended size of bush hog and box blade for this tractor.

Also if you have experience (positive or negative ) with certain brands I'd like your input.

I use an IH 300 with live pto to pull a 6 ft Rotary Cutter ($860 & 60 hp gearbox) to bush hog 40 acres of tough grass, weeds and small trees twice a year. I have used it for 6 years with no problems and the blades look like new.

I burned out my live pto clutch which must of been marginal versus the tractor stalling or the shear pin going. Where needed, I don"t cut the full 6 ft, but go down to 3-4 ft cuts or raise the deck.

The IH 300 is rated at 43 pto hp I believe and I think an IH A is around 20 pto hp. Depending on what you are cutting and how close to the ground, I don"t think your IH A could handle anything wider then 48"

I pull a 6-foot Bush Hog (trade name) Squealer with an over-running clutch on my 140 (almost same as a Super A). I cut mixed grass 3-4 times a year and she does just fine. I had a Danco C-4 belly mount before that and she did fine with that, too. It was either 5 or 6-foot, I forget which. Both were sized by CIH dealer.

I have a woods 6' finish mower behind my 140 (same C123 engine as Sup A). Mower has three spindles and blades. It cuts fine. I mow 2-3 acres every week in warmer months with it. A bush hog with single spindle and hinged blade tips would take more power I think and I probably wouldn't go over 5 ft. I would certainly test it (or a similar one) before investing money.

I have a B & A. The B has the original size motor. Works OK with Woods 6' finish more on the yard as long as the grass is not to high. I also pull a 5' shreader. It will bog down in high grass. The troque will get through it but it really bogs down. The A is rebuilt as a Super A. I alter a 4' Cub belt driven bush hog to go on it. The tractor has plenty of power but the mower slips in high grass.

Does anyone make a rear mower or bush hog that works on the one-point hitch on my 140? It has an old bush hog on it now (don't know what make it is) but I'm not real happy with the job it does.

Thanks

Chip

I got a Howse 5' bush hog type for a 140 fast hitch from the IH dealer in Danville, VA.

I know this is an old post, but I would really like to see a picture of this or any picture of a Super A, 100, 130, or 140 pulling a bush hog.
