Super C steering

What type oil goes in the steering housing on a Super C? There are 3 pipe plugs, 1 on the front I assume is for draining not sure why there are 2 on the top I think it is a commom oil chamber unless 1 is to bleed off air. Thanks Joe

80W90, 85W140, 140, etc. Some use cornhead grease if leaking, or even regular grease.

Thanks I just rebuilt the entire unit new seals and bearings. Still need to find out how much or to which plug on top to fill it to.

RTFM question. General rule, if there are three plugs, the bottom one drains it, the top one fills it, the one part way between is the full level.

take the shaft out the bottom and put in a new seal then use 140 gear oil. i HAVE TAKEN MANY APART AND THE GREASE HAS ALL WORKED OUT AWAY FROM THE GEAR.

Top plug is the fill, bottom is the drain and the middle one is the oil level. Fill till oil comes out the middle hole. I've rebuilt a couple of these and if you put in a new seal and if the vertical shaft is worn, use a speedy sleeve or have a machinist repair it so there is a good surface for the seal, it won't leak oil out.

Exactly what these fine gentlemen are saying... i just finished my restoration of a 51' Super C and i had the same head scratcher. But i figured out after i put the worm gear back in and replaced the back oil seal that it filled from the top and the in between was the fill level. I myself used 90 wt in there, and everything is working perfect for me.
