Looking for someone that restores IH tractors close to Eastern Iowa Western Ill.Have a 460 Gas that I would like done. Any contacts on reputable restorers would be appreciated. Thanks and have a great memorial day.

There are alot in Eastern Iowa.

Fangmans in Farley Iowa is excellent and have a passion for the farmalls & IHs. How will work wiht you on what you want done. Can be pricey but depends on how far you go.

Many others just need to know what you want done.

OK the cold Hard Facts about TRACTOR RESTORATION>>>a restoration can take 200 or more hours on a tractor, that means ripping off the sheetmetal, stripping all cast iron and sheet metal, sanding, priming, painting ,new wiring, etc, etc. the average shop is going to charge you between 75.oo to 100.oo bucks and hour to do this plus the cost of paint..you are looking at 2K easy, more like 2500.00
a tractor restoration is something best done by yourself.
you might be better off selling the tractor, add the 2K to what you get for it, add another 1K for agrivation and buy one thats been restored or just newer.
yea there are guys out there that will do a quick mask and spray for a few hundred but any monkey can do that, and your not really getting nothin....
restoring a tractor is a labor of love. oh all the above prices do not include any kind of mechanical repairs the machine might need...
when you see all the pretty pictures of guy's with their restored tractors on this site you can bet they did them themselves..

Mike it can cost way more than that. 2-3K just to prep it and paint can be low. I know a guy that has an $800 paint job on a garden tractor and he did the prep. Then start adding in tires if needed plus any repairs. Good restro can real easy breat 5k and could hit 10K if it needs the engine rebuilt and more.

I also know another guy who paid to have an H restored. Don't know what he spent but it's the only tractor he kept when he retired from farming. It's also a tractor he drove home and a 12 year old new from the dealership in 1948. He just didn't have a place to work on it.

So I see nothing wrong with having it done if that is what the owner wants. Me? I'd do it myself.

Rick

Why don't we let him and the restorer talk about cost? Heck, maybe he's fixing grampa's/dad's old tractor and money isn't an object.

To restore one is to disassemble every thing and rebuild or replace it, can easy spend 15000, and more the larger the tractor. You can get a paint job for less.

I believe it's just like custom cars... you can generally buy one already done for about 1/2 to 2/3 the cost of having one done.
Unless its Dad or Grandpa's old tractor, it just isn't financially worth it if you have to pay someone "reputable".

There's a man in Iowa that's restoring his own tractor and he said he has close to 10k in it. Hal

Tractor was F.I.L.s, wife drove it while helping her father when younger. Tractor is straight with a new clutch and TA. Back tires are only about 2 years old. Sheet metal is just about perfect, and only a couple gaskets to be replaced.Might replace wiring and need to hook lights up again. Engine runs great. Myself, I'm a JD man, but like all colors of old iron. I'm doing this for my wife mostly.I understand the cost thing, but this thing is a real nice candidate. Thanks for all the comments.

Actually, if you had been K.S. instead of T.S. in Iowa, I'd think it might have been my dad's old 460. My K.S. nephew has it now in eastern Iowa. I had the chance to get it, but didn't think at the time I wanted to haul it over 500 miles. Mom wanted someone in the family to have it for nothing rather than sell it. My brothers and sis didn't want it and since my nephew had recently bought a small acreage near the Amanas, I suggested giving it to him. Needless to say, he was tickled to get it. It was a '63 and really slick when Mom left the farm in the late '90s. 460 gas w/Fast-Hitch and extra remotes.
