IH 300 Utility Starter

I am at a loss. I have an IH 300 Utility and the starter is to the point of replace instead of rebuild. The numbers on the starter tag are 1107448. The starter drive housing is stamped with a 531. The starter using three holes for attachment to the tractor. The middle hole has been broken off so I have used the bolt with a washer to immulate the missing piece. I have a 12 volt battery running the tractor. Two questions: 1. Will the two hole starters I have found work or is there truly a three hole starter? 2. The starter I am looking for should be for a 12 volt system correct?

You do need a 3 bolt. Yes the 2 bolt may bolt on but most of the time the 2 bolt is a lower power type starter. Sort of like using a starter from an A or B on and H. Yes it will bolt on but it does not have the torque the correct starter for the H has. As for being 6 or 12 volts a 6 volt starter will work on 12 volts but a 12 volt starter will not work on 6 volts

You have a starter built out of mismatched parts. The 1107448 starter is used on Farmall H and M series tractors. It had a two bolt mount on the drive end. Most likely the housing has had two holes added for mounting the magnetic starter switch to make it work in your application.

The two bolt mounting drive end frame has larger holes than the three bolt housing. I have never tried to install one in a three bolt clutch housing so I don't know if you could make it work or not. The drive end frame that you need to replace your broken one is 1931507 (delcoRemy). It was discontinued back in the 70's so you are unlikely to fine a new one from DelcoRemy. I have not found any after market source for them either though I suspect that that they maybe are being made in China as a lot of starters for older tractors are available as DR clones. DR parts will mostly interchange but the bolts in them are metric.

The correct number starter for you tractor would be 1108041, 6 volt system. The starter for a 12 volt application would be number 1108174. You could use either one on your tractor. Using the 6 volt starter will be a little harder on the starter drive as it will kick in faster than the 12 volt but they usually last a long time anyway. The 6 volt magnetic switch will also work on 12 volts but it will have a shortened life if held engaged for too long at a time.

This site lists a starter for the 6 volt systems. There is a $60 core charge added that I would expect you to lose a good share of with your broken housing. You may want to ask what the reduction in core credit will be with a broken housing when you are looking for a starter.
