From the info on this forum, I learned that both D-301 and D-310 diesel engines were used in the 715. How do you tell which engine a particular combine has?

Tobaccoman,

Look at the engine and if it has spark plugs and a carburator it is gas, and if it has injectors with steel lines from the injection pump to the injectors, rather than spark plug wires, it is a gas.

It does have a diesel engine; I just want to know how to tell if the engine is a D-301 or a D-310.
Also, if you re-read your post, I think you meant the last word to be "diesel".

I think the man understands the difference between a gas and a diesel engine. He is merely asking which diesel engine it has. The early 715s had the D301 diesel and the real late ones had the D310 diesel.

Look @ injection pump. The 301 will have either a Stanadyne or a Roosa Master pump. The 310 will have a Bosch unit, I believe. The 310 is german, made at IH"s german engine plant. The 301 is a non-sleeved american engine. same block as the c-263, c-291, d-282. The c-301 gas is unsleeved as well, i believe.

The gasoline and diesel engine blocks may look the same but they are not interchangeable. The biggest difference being the amount of head bolts. The gas engines uses one more bolt than the diesel.
