300 12 volt conversion

Bought a 12 volt conversion kit out of Red Power Magazine. Got it put on the tractor and everything fits great. but I have a question: Alternator is self-exciting but I need to know what wires need to stay on the regulator? Or should I just run a wire from the alternator to the postive post on the battery? At this point I hooked up the battery and nothing happened(just like the battery was unhooked). Next question: This is a negative ground system. Cant I just turn the battery around in the box and hook it that way(opposite the original right way)

When switching to an alternator from an old Generator, you would NOT use any part of any old Voltage Regulator that was for an original Generator system.......

If????? you have a one wire self exciting internally regulated Alternator, its big main hot output wires to the load (NOT battery/starter) side of the ammeter (if it has an ammeter) or else to the hot ungrounded battery post or where the big battery cable attaches to a starter switch or solenoid etc. (in cases with no ammeter)

The wire that used to connect to BAT on a Voltage Regulator wires to the load (NOT battery/starter) side of the ammeter (if it has one) so that wire could be used to attAch to the Alternators output HOWEVER when changing from a 20 amp genny to an alternator I like to upgrade that wire to 10 or 8 gauge depending on alternators rating.

Of course, the wires that ran from GEN/ARM or FLD on a VR to the genny are no longer used.

If the alternator is for Neg ground BE SURE AND WIRE THE BATTERY THAT WAY i.e. Neg to frame ground.

If it has an ammeter and you swap from Pos to Neg ground, the ammeter leads need reversed or it reads bass ackwards.

If it has a coil distributor ignition and was Pos ground and you change to neg ground, the coil leads need reversed also

With an alternator you have to have it - ground or you will let the smoke of of the alternator the moment you hook it up. As for the old wiring for the generator you take that stuff off including the V.R. Since you have the 1 wire alternator you just wire it to the battery + side or if you have a solenoid you can wire it to the battery side of it

so what you guys call a ammeter is what I call an amp gauge? On the dash panel next to the oil pressure gauge? If so I already switched the wires around.

Ok I think I got it now! So I need to connect the BAT wire from the VR to the wire that runs to the ALT on the back?

The biggest concern I have it the way the battery hooks up. Is ok to just turn the battery around in the tray and hook it up the way its supposed to be? Or do I have to rewire it? I don"t see how come I can"t but I did hook it up and nothing happened. Just like I didn"t have a battery in it. But I did have all the wires unhooked from the voltage regulator.
