Barn find.......well sort of

well, I have been looking for a Regular for a bit now, and found one on Craigs list only 40 miles away. Had been sitting in a small barn/shed until 3 weeks ago, when the building was torn down around the Regular and a Little Genius #8 2 bottom plow. it is a 1928, and has been on the property since the owner's grandfather bought it and the plow new in 1928. She is going to try to find the paperwork for it, which will be great if she does. It last ran in 2007, and is all there except for the starting tank. All things considered, she is in pretty good condition. Engine is stuck, but I looked inside, and it is VERY clean on the crank and cam. I am thinking it won't take much to get her started and running.

I was able to get both of them for $500. Had to take the A to the location to haul them out to the driveway and then winch them onto the trailer. I am pleased.

anyway, some pics of the adventure:

Tom, 50/50 AFT and acitone squirt alittle in each plug hole let it sit a week or two. She may be only dry stuck. You like the project! oldiron29

Very nice find, but what makes it more special to me is that it has been on that farm since new in 1928.

keep us posted on progess

oldiron, yeah to a certain degree I do like the projects. however, right now, I am getting the tractors I want to own aquired. Not moving real fast on the restorations on them, but getting the tractors and the parts. The A in the picture, is about 3/4's done, and I am doing it in stages. I also use the ones that i have that are running to a certain degree, so a total tear down, and restore is not in the cards right now. PLus, I just don't have the time right now to devote to a full restoration. About the only thing i have been doing is make them run, and run safely.

However, I am getting all the parts and tractors, because retirement is in 4 1/2 years, and then the time will free up. Since I will have most of the parts, about the only thing I will need to get is paint and gaskets.....I'll have everything else.

Nice find! When I bought my 10/20 it had been sitting outside forever and was stuck. I took out the plugs and sprayed penetrating oil in the cylinders and it eas free in 2 weeks of soaking! Probably has something to do with the exhaust running out down low and the rain can't get in em. good luck

Great to see you got the plough as well. To many guys have the tractor but not the equipment that the machine worked with, which is a major partof the history of the tractor. Keep them together.

Tom,I also have a 1928,it was stuck but freed up.Yours looks like my twin, even the same color.I have refused to paint mine. The locals at the county fair shake their head but the press loves it and it usally makes the paper each year

well, got the valve cover off, and all valves are loose and working. fairly clean up top. Got the plugs out, and looked in with a flashlight. #1 looks to be lightly rusted. #2 and #3 are shiney. #4 has ever so slight rust spots, but fairly clean.

Clutch is froze solid, and jamb full of mouse nest. Having trouble getting clutch cover off. bolts came out easy. got it started about 1/2", and she won't move no more......

Poured 1/2 cup of PB blaster into each cylinder.

Need to get the clutch off, then I will work on breaking her free.

Surpisingly, both throttle and spark levers are free and work! bonus. Got the carb off, and she is surprisingly clean, but will take it apart and clean thoroughly.

Film at 11.............

Well, got the clutch cover off. Jamb full of mouse nest. Clutch is junk and will probably have to cut the bolt heads with a torch to get them off. Got engine broke loose, and it actually turns over very nicely. Seems the issue was the flywheel was rusted to the clutch housing. As soon as I got the crud chiseled out, shot it with some Blaster, and used a pry bar on the clutch fingers. grunted a bit, and she was free.

I also checked the mag on the bench. Nice, hot, blue spark. I may have her running before the weekend is out......

now to get the clutch off.

thanks guys, appreciate the comments. there are still some of the original decals present. I may actually consider leaving this old girl just like she is. Clean up the dirt, grease, and crud, and leave her in her work clothes.

I sat in a presentation at the winter convention on the F series tractos. The speaker has about 40 of them........all in their work clothes. Seems cool to be at a show with your old, rusty tractor, and she fires right up and purrs.

I think that is what i might do with this one.
