M Hydraulic Pump Coupling

Working on an M, and want to disable the hydraulic pump. Took the lower cover off, and see a coupling, but don't see how to uncouple it. Nothing in the service manual, or operators manual. Need a ittle help. Thanks.

The M coupler has lugs that fit into slots in the pump and counter shaft flanges. The lugs are offset 90° on the coupler. The coupler slides out as the pump assemble is lowered out of the center section of tractor.

(quoted from post at 18:08:00 05/26/11) Can the coupler be disconnected, without removing the pump?

The short answer is no. You can only half remove the pump and do it. You have to take all the plumbing and the cap off the pump. Then support the bottom of the pump with a floor jack. Then screw 2-4 long (+3") 3/8" bolts in the holes. This will keep everything inline. Lower the pump with the jack and the thing will come out. Jack it back up and you are good to go.

All the couplers that I"ve dealt with have a cotter pin thru the coupler and the lug in the middle. All you should have to do is remove the cotter pin and then the center lug will slide out.

Must be you have never been into an M

H's have a bar with two sliding things with cotter pins locking them on. M's have a disc with opposing driving dogs.

I have run across a couple of that style couplers on an M. I think they must be after market couplers.

Owen,

How did they work??? There is no room for any extra pieces that I can see.

One of the lugs is actually like a piece of key stock. One side of the coupler has a slot instead of the lug sticking out. You slide the coupler up into one of the slots and then line the other one up and slide in the key. There is a hole in the middle of the key to accept a small cotter pin through the coupler and the key. The cotter pin is only about a 3/32 - 1/8 inch diameter rather than the 1/4 inch the the H couplers use.

Loren, I took the pipes off of the pump and then put a piece of redi rod about 4 inches long in the front hole of the belly pump on one side and the back hole on the other wheree the pump mounts to the tractor. Then with a nut and washer lower it enough to pull the coupling out and draw the pump back up in the tractor. No heavy lifting or spilled oil.
