1206 with t/a, how much noise(whine) is normal?

Havent really usedthe tractor much. Had a new t/a, cluth, and rear end gone through last summer. Using it now for planting corn and it seems to (me) that it is awful loud, not engine or turbo, noise when she is in gear and moving. Does it in any gear, t/a forward or back. Is there any way to explain to me what is normal and what is not? Even though it was gone through, ya always have to wonder about the quality of the work.

Over the years I have come across a fair number of 06 & 56 series with a substantial ring and pinion whine. Always worse on one with a cheap cab.

I was always told that the TA gears came as a matched set same as the ring and pinion. Could be that the ring gear isn't set up right also.

Rebuilt TAs usually come with a matching gear for the low side to insure that they get installed with the correct number of teeth and the correct pressure angle on the teeth. There was a real problem with TAs being installed with mismatched gears and the rebuilders being blamed for the resulting problems.

The gears in the 1206 have a 20° pressure angle on the teeth. Most of the gears in the later 56 series and newer have 25° pressure angle teeth. Since both the new and old gears have the same number of teeth they can be mismatched when assembled. When that happens they will be noisy and likely to soon fail since the load on the teeth will be on the tips of the teeth rather that face.

I don't know what is worse. The noise from the back 2 cylinders being inside the cab with you on a 5020 (or so it seems like) or a the bull gear whine on my 1256. Both had steel Eggin cabs.

I recall that I had to wait on the tractor an extra month because of just what you are saying. He had the mis matched gears in and had to replace. The thing is it didnt seem to have this whine until just noticing it today. We havent even put 30 hours on it this spring, I didnt notice it all disking yesterday or driving it from here to the field yesterday. Just seem to start being real loud today, about 10 acres into a 30 acres field. Also, when I was coming home and was going down a kinda long hill, and the t/a forward, it seemed like something was jumping, or something, kinda like every now and then a chain jumping sprockets( I know it isnt a chain) but thats kinda what it felt like. Wondering if I should have it checked out before I use it too much more. The guy that did hhe work isnt even doing tracotrs any more, apparently is working in SD like every one else.

The big nut on the countershaft if it is to tight it will whine! I always tighten them to take out the play then backoff then snugback up. Good luck Bob

What Owen said,

Gear whine 'anywhere' is almost always caused from mismatched gears.

Usually what happens is that someone "thinks" a gear is okay, then puts that used gear against a new one.

It'll whine every blessed time.

The different pitch gears make the noise. Don"t run her long if this is the case. there is a serial number split for the gears with the different pitch. contact CIH.
