Farmall H Oil Filters

I purchased two oil filters at different times and received two different sizes. I was comparing my '41 H to a friends '47 H last night, I had a tall filter canister, he had a short canister.
What was the difference, an option or were there different sizes for different years?

there were 2 filter sizes that i know of for the h and the m. the "small" was the newer style, and the "big" was on the older tractors. my 42 and 48 m both have the big filters, my 49 h, and late m both have the small filters. not sure exactly when the change was made.

I have a 43 H with the small filter and a 43 M with the large filter. I've seen them reversed. I can't say I know the reasoning.

The farmall A- H can use the tall or short filters. But thre is no listing for a shot filter on a M. The manual shows no numbers for a short filter. Our M was a 51 model had tall filter. You can use the short because they are the same diameter and use the right center bolt for the canster.

(quoted from post at 11:49:25 05/26/11) there were 2 filter sizes that i know of for the h and the m. the "small" was the newer style, and the "big" was on the older tractors. my 42 and 48 m both have the big filters, my 49 h, and late m both have the small filters. not sure exactly when the change was made.

Actually, there are 3 different sizes. The early M, '39, '40, maybe into '41 and '42 used an even larger oil filter. Same filter as used in the W9, 600, and 650. The canister is considerably larger in diameter.

According to my Farmall H parts catalog the oil filter change between the tall and short ones happened with s/n 121022 and up which was a 1942 model, Hal.

Think I remember the reduction in oil filter size for H and the M gas engines was because of improvements in oil filter cartrage technology.

My 40 and 41 both use the same big oil filter as my 49 did. My parts guy has never asked me anything other than "The big one, or the little one." I did throw him for loop when I asked for a Luberfiner for my buddys M once.

I think it was in Guy Fays book, the shorter filter was cheaper, and was, for whatever reason, a popular feild change-over package. Since its not a pressurized filter, aand the oil just kinda drains back through, doesnt really matter what size it is Id guess.

The original filters were made if fine wire mesh screen and were actually reusable if cleaned. On the other hand they did not do much as a filter. When paper media filters were introduced they had many more square inches of filter area so they were able to to a much better job of filtering even with the smaller size.

We had a new 42 H during WW2. It was bought in April. It had the big oil filter and I remenber as a kid that the element looked like it had a white sock over it. When changed, they were usually put in a bin along the tractor barn wall.I think IH stopped using the big filter for mo. or so after our tractor was built (#99something). almost 100,000 serial # and went to the small one and then went back to the big one for a while . mayby 2 or 3 mo. prodution. THEN they started using short one from then on. All this was mayby to save money during war. -- 1939M came with big 4 1/2" wide canister about 5 " tall. It, like someone above said, was changed about end of 1940 to tall canister,{same size as early H}. Incidently, New 1941 M Deisal used this old big canister for years. One note, our 42 H had a namplate made of steel and painted gray with black letters. U.S. had more steel than alluminum then [need for Planes].Sorry for long answer.
