float stuck in carb and didn't know it went to start tractor and gas flew out of the exaust. I fixed the carb problem but now the engine is locked up. took the plugs out and tried to hand crank but its tight. What could have happened to it?

I believe what you are describing is called a hydro-lock. I don't have much experience working on this problem, but if you Google "hydro-locked engine" I am sure you can get some good results.

With spark plugs out you have eleminated hydraulic lock. I would pull the starter to make sure it isn't locked up and while you have it off you can bar the engine in both directions on the flywheel ring gear to help determine your problem.

If you have removed the plugs The engine should not be hydro- locked. Did you try turning over with all the plugs out of engine. This would pump a lot of the gas out of cylinders. If you let it set for a while the rest of gas evaperates enough it should start.

I agree it is probably the starter locked up loosen it and it should free up the engine. Re-tighten the starter and it will be OK. Change the oil. It will be 3/4 gasoline!.
Always (always) turn off the fuel at the tank.
Even if stopped for 15 minutes, it is a necessary reality and polishes up the brass on the little valve. Jim

Yes, I agree that the problem could very well be the starter locked up on the bendix. Sometimes you can tap the starter with a ball peen hammer and free it up. If that doesn't work, I have heard that you can try rocking the tractor back and forth in high gear. I wouldn't take the starter off until you try these methods.

I'm with the locked starter group, happens a lot. Loosen it up and wiggle it, it will pop free. Updraft carb, well below cylinders not likely to hydro lock, gas usually runs out drain hole in carb.

Just put it in 5th and rock it a little. Works just the same with no tools.

(quoted from post at 06:08:02 05/26/11) Checked starter and is fine even took it off engine still locked

You've eliminated all the simple possibilities... Now it gets expensive.

My guess is that you bent a connecting rod trying to start it while it was flooded with gas.

Time to drain the oil and pull the pan.

Check the starter as the others have advised. Trying to turn a Super M with a hand crank will always be tight. A flooded upflow carb will allow alot of gas to run out of the carb. Being an upflow type there can't be much gas sucked up to the cylinders.

Squirt a few pumps of oil in the spark plug holes & let it set overnight. Put it in 5th gear & rock it back & forth with the rear wheels. If that doesn't loosen it, tear it down.

Or spun a bearing because the gasoline in the crankcase washed all the oil out.

The gas tank on that tractor would have to had been completely full before gasoline leaking by the float valve in the carburetor could get high enough to pass through the manifold and into the cylinders. The gasoline would have filled the oil pan and crankcase first. You need to drop the oil pan and take a peek up inside the engine. My guess is that the engine is seized from lack of lubrication.

Some have said it would be hard to get gas in the cylinders. I would say is is impossible.
