update to farmall cub problems. still not fixed

Okay switched the coil a second time to make sure i had spark. thats taken care of... i took the carb offf and sprayed out out with the air hose. put it back on. and the cub reluctantly started. when it was running for about five minutes it kept surging. the gov. shaft kept moving back and forth and the engine surged each time. so it ran very rough. after a couple minutes it died. what does this sound like carb problems that can be fixed with a rebuild kit or gov. problems? thanks to all
 
The high speed fuel delivery is at fault. THe passages and tiny drill holes in the body of the main jet are probably still clogged. Most times an over night submersion in carb cleaning fluid is needed, followed by serious following and blowing out of passages. If the fuel is getting to the float bowl the problem is in the internal passages and orifices. Do not drill, or ream out holes bigger than they were. Torch cleaning wires can and do ream sizes, be careful.

I agree with Jim. You need to take the carb off and submerse it for a while in carb cleaner. After this, dismantle all the internal components and make sure you check EVERY orifice for crud.

Before you do the whole treatment as suggested, try the short form. Unscrew the main jet from the side of the carburetor and make sure it is clear. You can use a SOFT wire (like a phone wire) into the end of the jet to make sure it is clear. I lot of guys think they cleaned the jet but didn't really get it cleared. No other disassembly required to try this.
 
I agree, a complete carburetor kit is under $50, that and thorough cleaning of the passages will get your Cub back in excellent running condition. Be sure that the float is adjusted right as well.
