Drove my new toy last week for the first time.Trying to set brakes from seat almost impossible. Is there a rod assembly that can be used on a M.Also really surprised at the difference between 4th and 5th gear.A lot faster than the H. Thanks Bill

My M is a lot faster in all gears than my H. I know later tractors had an attachment for setting the brakes without bending over so far - don't know if the same attachement works on a M. If it does I may find one myself.

Yeah, those Ms are nasty for that. Do a search on ebay for "brakelock".

Make something like Allan is showing you in his picture to lock the brakes. To release the brakes push against the pedals and the locking latch will fall down. BTW do you have an operators manual? Armand

I don't know what has been done to your H or M. But, from the factory 4th in both tractors is a little over 5 mph, unless either has the 7 mph 4th option. 5th in the H is 15 and a fraction, M 16 and a fraction. Rear tire size can make a significant difference in either. Factory specs are 11.2-38 with the H and 13.6-38 with the M.

Yes there were several types of brake locks sold either using a pull sod or the step-on type all you needed to do was press the brakes again and they would unlock.

I find setting the factory brake lock on an "M" or "H" is pretty easy. That is if every thing moves freely and is not worn or bent. I don't have any trouble bending over or reaching down and I'm 74 !! I am 6,1 and have been told I've got long arms; maybe that helps !!

On my H i carry a long screwdriver in the toolbox on the seat tube to lift up the latch as i put my foot on the brake pedals. MJ

(quoted from post at 22:08:54 05/25/11) You haven been around many Ms or the Hs as they both had varouis types of aftermarket brake locks.

If you are talking to me, I am not aware that IH ever supplied one with the machine. The poster asked if it was SUPPOSED to have one.

I am aware of many aftermarkets including my little piece of chain since I have rear remote and the hose cover is in place.

There is, look at the picture.

Left foot activates the brake lock; tap the brake as you normally would to release.

I've never seen the style that Allen posted a picture of, but there were several different styles available. I don't think IH manufactured any of them. They were ALL made by aftermarket manufacturers, but you COULD purchase one from your IH dealer. The H that my dad owned had a totally different style that worked quite well. I've been intending to re-create one or two for my Hs.

When I was a teen-ager, Dad farmed a 1/4 section that was about 10 miles away from the home farm. I made many trips with the "M" pulling a flat bed trailer with implements on it to that 1/4 section. 5th gear didn't seem "fast enough" after 4 or 5 miles!
