What kind of lubrication does the gearbox take that is between the
hydraulic pump and the distributor? My distributor had oil run out
of it when I pulled the cap. I have cleaned and dried that out now.

Look closely and you will see a small pipe plug. Remove that plug and install a grease zerk. Your owners manual has instructions on how often to grease that zerk. BUT!! If you have oil under the distributor cap, you need to replace some oil seals in that hydraulic pump. Probably at each end.

You also need to check the OIL seal between the engine and the grease-able gear case.
