some info on the starting of the wd40. i would not say there is a diesel half and gas half as wondered about. it is a diesel engine that can run on gas when compression is reduced. to start on gas:
turn rachet gear knob so groove is facing you.
this places a cam in pump horizontaly.
engage shut off lever. this opens the four starting valves, enlarging the combustion chambers with the spark plugs to reduce compression ratio.closes large butterfly valve shutting off diesel intake.opens small butterfly valve to carburator. engages magneto. then crank and start engine. engine runs at 700 rpm on gas warming up the engine. after approx 1 min. the starting lever is automatically tripped in the pump closing starting valves, opens large butterfly and closes small one. and also disengages magneto. when on diesel the magneto (F4) never turns, which means it should never wear out. all this is done automatically from gas to diesel. not like the wd9's and so on that were manual change over.
during their time period they had three diff. head designs. first was vertical, meaning injectors were installed straight in from top. then had 10 degree head design, injectors were mounted on ten degree angle. and last they went to the 45 degree angle as the wd9's are.
