660 belt pulley gearbox

A friend just bought a nice 660 diesel and would like to put a belt pulley on it. He has several Ms and SMs and he asked me if an M/SM belt pulley gearbox will interchange with the 660?

Any help/ideas appreciated. When I was a kid, I remember my granddad--- I think--- taking a belt pulley gearbox off the M to put on the 560 occasionally when we needed more horses on the Gehl silage blower.

I don't think they are the same as an M. A 560 and an M are the same. Except sometimes the actuating rod comes out the other side. This can be switched according to some.

If it is the same as a W-9 gearbox I can get you one in SE WI. It has been outside for 30+ years so it will need a lot of help.

visually they all look the same on W6,M, 400, 450, 560 and 660. i am just am not sure about the gear matching but i believe its the same.
the W9 definitly no match.

Not sure if it will fit as my 660 uses an Elwood transfer case where the belt pulley resides. I'd say that if the driving gear is there, it will fit. Utilities in the smaller line (300-350-460 don't have the gear and use a special plate on the IPTO for running a right angle belt pulley gearbox. 660 also have that plate for the planetary IPTO

Looks like my pictures won't come up in Classic. They should work in Modern so I am reposting. Edit: nope don't work in Modern but may later. Must be something down at Photobucket. That's a first for me.

If the housing will clear everything on the tractor they will bolt up. Probably have to modify the shifter shaft lever and linkage to use unless the parts from a international 560 will work. Some belt pulley housings are made for more clearance to remove and install starters.
Keep in mind that shaft speed will be more than a M. Probably why IH wanted a rear unit used.

As others have said one off of a 560, M, W-6 etc will work, but if its off the earlier letter series you have to change out the control lever or make your own. I put one of a W-6 onto my International 560, you just have to watch the clearence with the starter, air cleaner and fuel sediment bowl.
