H Water Pump leaking

I had the fan off my H, the water pump is now leaking slowly. It did not leak before. I did not put a lot of tension on the springs when I put it back on.

Is there tension that needs to be on the pump with the springs to prevent it from leaking, or do I need to replace it?

That's what the springs are for. Kinda. The springs hold the impeller forward in the housing. The seal is around the shaft. Pulling on it harder may get it back where it was running before... But I suspect you've disturbed the seal allowing it to seep. There is a packing nut you need to tighten just a little. That may work. But if it has not been disturbed for centuries the sealing material may be so hard you can't compress it any more.

I believe it is original. Is the repair process straight forward, or should I buy a rebuilt pump?

If the bearings are good you can put new packing in it yourself.
