M Tranny Capacity

I know it is more than 5 gallons as I was draining and a salesman came by - turned around and fluid over the floor. How much do I put back in the baby? Have gone through 300 posts and found nothing, gone to link after link - and, I know some of you "gifts to the uninitiate" have the answer. Thanks so much!

Never service a tractor you are not familiar with without a manual. Regardless of what you did not find, the amount of 13 gallons has been on this forum many times.

Well, Mr. Kansas somewhere, I only asked one simple question and did not aim to get put into time out, or castigated. I do not frequent the forum as a past time, but to take advantage of the fine knowledge of its constant viewers/repliers whom I have found are most courteous, including yourself on most responses. So, pardon me, but I was honestly seeking information and would love to know what to "search" for on the Farmall in order to find at least one of the several postings. Hope you have a good day in church tomorrow, in the event you are there. Unddoutedly we do know each other and especially if you are a Chapter 3 member.

i never could figure out why this question is asked so many times either. such a simple thing to figure out. pretty obvious it will hold more than 5 gal. drain tractor, then you have good idea how much can out.it would be more than 10 gal. so by 3 pails and fill till it runs out of check plug and you have your answer. good idea to have adding oil on hand that is left over.

It hold 12 gals plus maybe a little. No need for every one to get so testy. Pretty straight forward question.

Rustred, your theory doesn't work. I had plenty of pails as I could see the size of the box as you say a "pretty obvious" thing. I only said, I got to talking to a salesman and it ran over. So I scooted another under, and did have another stand by. All told, it did not fill two 5 gallon buckets including the amount on the floor. Taking your theory for refilling the thing, I would come up short, wouldn't I?
"Put back as much as you take out"?

sflem849: Thank you. Would you be so kind to tell me how to search for a specific such as you have presented, especially when it goes way back to 2004! I am not being sarcastic, but that was 7 years ago and how do you find it without scrolling down year after year, month after month, etc.? Did not take you long!

Howdy,
When I first joined this forum and asked a simple question the usual reply (by the grumpy guys that seemed to resent the intrusion to their forum) was GET A BOOK. Good thing that there were a lot of helpful guys that told me what I needed to know before my books arrived. And I thank them.

I answered your question, I just find it strange that individuals try to service things they don't know much about, without the proper instructions. As you found the search thing on this forum is not exactly perfect. I frequently try to look up things before I ask questions, usually takes a long time. But, I often stumble across things I need to know anyway. As to filling it with no manual, you just pull the plug on the left side of the trans housing and fill until it runs out. As to my tractors, I usually can't remember, so I look in the manual before I buy the oil. 13 gallons sticks in my head because it is a very common question. No offense intended, but I will continue to recommend manuals -- first thing I purchase when I buy a different tractor. As to Chapter 3, I am a member of the national organization. Harvester Highlights has things in it that are not found in other magazines. Most activities are 200 miles+ from where I live. That is not a complaint, just a reality.

AND, here is a link on the 2nd page of a search for "transmission capacity", SM and M or the same. 400 capacity was on the 1st page of the search. Looks like I'm not always a crab.
13 gallons

You bet! That is why I do once in a while have to ask a question and always feel like the responses are respectful of my ignorance. How does one accumulate knowledge - asking questions without buying a lot of books. That is the way I use to teach college, excelled in sales, and built relationships on the other persons story! Ask questions. Glad you found such help as well, at times.

what do you mean come up short when you fill till the case is full? no where did i say put in what you take out. 15 gal minus 13 poured in tractor till full leaves 2 left in pail dont it? i am not being sarcastic or ignorant but thats how i figure out how much oil a tractor trans and diff case holds, without having to chase down a book answer.

...How does one accumulate knowledge - asking questions without buying a lot of books...

I would have to disagree with this portion. One accumulates knowledge through research and then asking questions if clarification is required or they don't find everything they were looking for.

With that, you did search for it with the terrible YT search function so you did try to help yourself. There is a "how to" search thing in the classified ads section (maybe in the search part) It talks about how you use "" and + and other modifiers to enhance your search. ie if looking for Farmall A you would have to use "Farmall+A" The forum is set up on a (worthless) antique system that the "crabby old guys" don't want to see changed. With a better system (ie Vbulletin or other more modern forum types) new posts get promoted to the top and you don't have to scroll through by date and all that crazy stuff. But anyhow, I used Google. YT is one of the most trafficed websites out there so it comes straight to the top using Google. Red Power Forum and My Tractor Forum (junk) are the other two big ones.

Your reply was neat. Started my Sunday off with fun in the playground of the mind. But, how do I know what to research, etc. if I do not ask a question of myself, someone else, or the world in which I live?
Your assessment of YT search is appreciated, but I would assume both of us are appreciative of the service. Especially when it is there for Pete to look up an answer and post it! Now, I am well informed on the capacity of an M transmission all because I asked a question! (Maybe this last sentence qualifies this post for acceptance).

Thank you, CNKS, for your response. Also, for your prior post with the information previously requested. CNKS, now it couldn't be Central Northern KS as there are many chap 3 events at Smith Center, Salina, Washington. So, I ask myself, could it be Cheyenne County as to the abbreviation of a license plate. Just wondering. I was in Sainty 61-64.

CN are the initials of my first and last name. I live near Garden City, KS, approximately 70 miles from the OK border and 60 miles from CO. About 200 miles from Wichita and Salina, 220 miles from Amarillo, TX, 200 miles or so from Pueblo, CO, 300+ miles from Denver. In other words in the middle of the boonies -- but I prefer it here as to "metropolitan" areas. Nice to visit, but I wouldn't want to live there.

Expanded horizons country is what I call all of Western Kansas. Great country. Great people.
Great history. It is a delight to know of your whereabouts and I do know the country particularly you are in. I have a fine story about a guy from Western Kansas boarding a plane at Garden City and seated himself next to a man who boarded at Denver and is headed to Kansas City. After inquiring about each, the KC dude said, "I don't imagine you get to KC often, do you?" "No, just when I fly over it on my way to Europe." Expanded world! I love to tell that one when speaking in Western Ks. Enough.
