1944 Farmall A starter question??

I have a 1944 Farmall A and it has been converted to
12 volt. It starts every time except today. I
turned it off and when I re-started it, I got a
spark off the negative post on the battery and
nothing happened. I got my volt meter and I have
12.65 volts at the starter switch. But still
nothing. I took the switch off of the starter and
touched to positive cable end to the post on the
started and nothing. What should I do next? Thanks
everyone. Larry

My quess is that you have same problem as tseagan about 3 posts below yours. If I had dollar for every time I have unlocked starter I could have nice night on the town tonight....naah I forget I am to old for that.

Thanks, NDS, but I took the starter off and it all seems to be okay. I wanted to check the starter switch that is mounted on the starter for loose connections. Anyway, when the starter switch is off of the starter, and I touch the post on the starter with the positive cable from the battery, shouldn't it engage the starter? I'm getting good voltage to the starter, but the starter will not turn over.

Teddy 52 is right. Bad connection, will conduct enough to make the meter show, but starter load on bad connection causes high resistance.

Yes, cleaned and wire brushed battery post and terminals. Connections are good and clean. 12.65 volts to the starter switch on top of the starter. Ohm'd the switch and it ohm'd out good. Just nothing happens when the starter switch makes connection. I'm stumped at this point.

Can you turn the starter by hand? If not its bearings are trashed.
Will it turn if you whack it with a hammer? If not the brushes are done.

What is the voltage at the starter when you are trying to get it to crank? If it is less than 9 volts either you have a bad battery or poor connection. If over 10 volts the problem most likely is in the starter.

If you put battery voltage on the starter connection which in your case be a button where the starter sw makes contac and it doesent make the starter run you have a bad connection where that button is soldered to the field. Next stop is a starter shop.

Take the starter apart and clean the surfaces where the case parts meet. Also clean the starter to engine surfaces. Wire brush the bolts.

If over 10 volts, repeat the test measuring the voltage at the lug on the starter. If much less than the reading at the battery, you have a problem between the battery and starter (cable or connection).
