I have an ih 550 semi mount plow and it always tries to pull the front of the tractor into the furrow and the plowed ground is there a hitch adjustment I can make to help alleviate this problem? Thanks Shaun

I just have a question? Never had this plow; so cant really help.

The way I read your message is that the front tire is running on UN - Plowed ground, & the plow is pulling it down into the furrow toward the plowed the ground. Can You please clarify this? Normally the tire should be in the furrow already!

sorry I didn"t explain that the way I wanted to yes right tire is in the furrow but plow is constantly pulling the front of the tractor right and into the plowed ground have to ride the left brake to try to keep it from trying to pull me in a circle

You need to slide the wheels out on your tractor to the proper width for plowing with a 5-bottom plow. It is set too narrow.

How wide are your wheels set on the rear of the tractor? How many bottoms on what size tractor? Are you running any front weights on the tractor?

Your plow needs to be shifted to the left on the hitch so it drafts behind the tractor straight. To do this you may need to slide your wheels in to keep the tires where they belong in the furrow.

We had a 550 5 bottom 16" behind a 856 and it would pull straight with no draft. A 550 is a good plow.

Pulling the plow with a 4020 John Deere I have 1400 pounds. Weight on the front. The rear wheels are set on 60 inch centers plow is 5 bottom not sure how to tell how big the bottoms are

Land slides in good shape? Furrow wheel on rear of semi-mounted plow adjusted right? Is your 3 point free to swing horizonally like it should be? I take it this is not an "on land" hitch, but right wheels are in the furrow.
To check width, you should be able to measure the spacing on the beams. Don't know what the 550 was available in, but probably 14, 16 and 18".

It's all in the width of the tractor tread and the position the center pull point on the plow. No matter how bad or good the plow is working, running side ways or straight, the tractor should run straight with no side draft on tractor. Moving wheels and adjusting the hitch on a seven bottom plow is no five minute job I found out years ago when a customer was using his brakes to keep the tractor running straight. Tractor should run without even having a hand on the wheel theoretically. Plow is a whole different problem. Setting the tail wheel, correct land slide on rear bottom, gauge wheel, the steering linkage all involved.

slide the rear wheels out to at least 72" centers 75" probably better
then set the plow for the first bottom to cut proper width, 14,16,18 whatever the plow is
good luck

Thanks for the replys guys Im nearly done plowing for this year so I'll just try to get buy the best I can for now and this winter I'll try re spacing the rear wheels. Found a operators manual on ebay so I think I'll order that to

60" centers? Does the first bottom take a cut at all?

At 60", the first bottom should be running in the open furrow from the last pass.
