Hey guys! Went to pick up some parts today for my Aunt for her M and ended up buying a plow from the guy. It is a real nice IH #8 3-16 hydrulic lift. Thing is, I already have a three bottom and really want a two bottom for my SH (although a little concerned 2-16's might be too much??) Anyway the price and condition were too good to pass up! I have heard you can drop a bottom on these and was wondering what that would entail? Looks like you would just un-bolt the last arm and bottom, and move the rear wheel over (pictures would be great if anyone has done it). Is that all there is to it? Will probably convert this one back over to trip and put the hydraulic on the 3-bottom I already have (want to keep it together as its a slat bottom plow). Anyway thanks for your help!!!

I have heard that it is possible to take a bottom of as well, though I do not know how to do it. As to the plow possibly being too big, this is my opinion: Cub - 1-12; A - 1-16; B - 1-16; C - 1-16; H - 2-14; M - 3-12; SA - 2-12; SC - 2-12; SH - 2-16; SM - 3-16.
All these are estimates, and some "give or take" applies. If you have really hard soil or are plowing gumbo, 2-16 could be too much. For anywhere between (and including) fairly heavy clay and very light silt and sand, your plow sounds like a good match for your tractor in 2nd or 3rd gear.
Have fun plowing, SF

There are two models of #8 3-bottom plow. One can be reduced to 2-bottom (#8), the other can't (#8L)

A #8L plow will have a wider pull bar and a third main beam in between the two that are attached to the pull bar.

On a #8, the third bottom will flare out from the second bottom and kind of "stick out" to the left as you sit on the tractor. It LOOKS like it was added on.

Removing the bottom is as simple as unbolting the tail wheel, the beam and the brace. Bolt the tail wheel to the corresponding holes on the second bottom.

The only part you might need is the 2-bottom lift arm for the tailwheel. On the 3-bottom #8, the tailwheel lift arm is bolted to the axle leg outside the frame. On the 2-bottom, the lift arm is clamped to the axle shaft in between the 1st and 2nd bottom beams.

Other than the heavy lifting, it is easy and obvious.
