Cub Problem

My son dropped off a cub which I am not familiar with.No ID plate on it, however engine was cast on 12-13 1966, The problem I'm having is looks to be hydraylic oil leaking from the bell housing inspection plate.Don't think its coming from tranny but it could be, Tranny doesn't seem to be low. the hydralic reservoir sits on top of that area, is there any way for hyd oil to seep down into the bell housing area, it does get low quickly. It doesn't make sense to me. can anyone help out?

Virtual guarantee it ISN'T hydraulic oil. It is either transmission oil via the seal on the transmission input shaft and usually coming out the hand hole, or it is engine oil via the rear crankshaft seal and usually coming out the front cover on the bell housing. Point the tractor down hill and if it is transission oil you will get a whole lot at once.

If your losing hyd oil and you don't see any external leaks then the hyd pump shaft seal maybe bad and allowing the hyd oil to leak into the crankcase raising the oil level in the oil pan high enough to come out the rear main seal and run out the insp plate hole.

On my first read, I didn't pick up that the hydraulic oil level was going down. What XFARMA said is exactly right. Engine oil overfull goes along with the other symptoms. The seal on the pump shaft is probably an o-ring.

I'm with Jim Becker on this. I think it's most likely transmission oil. If so, you will have to split tractor in front of transmission to fix it. Probably new bearing and seal at front of transmission. Because of the way the clutch housing is made, the transmission oil will accumulate at the back of the clutch housing(no drain hole back there) and if you point the nose of the tractor down hill, that accumulation will come out in a flood of oil.

BINGO :!:

TD,

I picked up a Cub that had been used very little, mostly setting that had the exact problems as yours, decreasing hyd fluid, increasing crankcase oil. I figured as long as the o ring needs repacing I might as wll try stop leak first, I might get lucky.
I used LUCAS HD OIL STABILIZER in the crankcase and Lucas Hyd Stop Leak in the Hyd Fluid - it's ok to use Power Steering Stop Leak in the Hyd, I checked with Lucas, the PS is same formula as Hyd just concentrated more.
Two times mowing the lawn and the poblem stopped. That was two years ago and everything is still fine.
I normally agree with fix it right, but I gave this a shot and it worked. I think the o rings might have needed to be juiced up from lack of use.
