Looking for opinions on the best and worst case scenario with a 650 that runs good on gas but not diesel....thanks in advance..

Need more info than that. Pump, injectors, head, valves, air in system, malfunctioning throttle, malfunctioning switch over gear...I could keep going, but you can't make a decent guess without a couple clues.

Does it try to hit? Does it smoke? Compression?

Lacking more info here's my guesses at possible causes (best to worst):

1 - out of fuel

2 - airbound injection system (air in injector lines/injectors)

3 - plugged fuel filter (primary and/or secondary filters)

4 - starting linkage out of adjustment (starting valves not closing fully). Or intake/exhaust valves clearance out of adjustment.

5 - main valves worn

6 - bad injection pump or cracked head

----

What does it do when you switch to diesel - white smoke, black smoke, no smoke? Does it knock (tries to fire) or is it silent?

More detail would be helpful!

plugged water separator screen, stuck rack or plunger in pump, or more likely a stuck or bent starting valve from some poorly misguided fool shutting it off on the gas cycle.

I was told there is a valve in the pump that sticks, suppose to be easy fix. He showed me where that valve was but it's been to many years ago. I have a IH service manual for the 9 series and will see what I can find.

ya i like that!
never did make sense to shut down on gas.

think the valve he was referring to was the scavenging valve. Also wanted to mention that let the gas engine warm up the diesel engine good. I had trouble with my 650, couldn't get the gas to start so I pulled it around a lot. Found out the throttle lever wasn't in the right position. Once I got it running on diesel I decided to shut it off on gas and to my surprise it ran great on gas. Think it had just sat long enough that something wasn't just right, maybe operators error also. I do have a IT manual along with the IH service manual for the 9 series

Doesn't make sense to me...

actually if the tractor has its original b-series pump there is no scavenging valve. the scavenger valve was only on the a-series and pre a-series pumps.
