Help with My M

It's been leaking antifreeze into the oil. You can take the drain plug out real easy and get maybe 4 tablespoons full now in a two week period.

So based on advise I got on this forum, I took off the oilpan to see if I can determine where it is coming from.

I took off the pan yesterday.

Today I can clearly see the antifreeze is leaking alongside the piston. The piston was extended about a quarter inch below the block and it was definately coming down beside the piston.

But now that I think about it, I couldn't see clearly enough to determine if it was between the piston and sleeve, or I guess it could be coming in from outside the sleeve.

I guess I better look again closer.

What is this telling me so far?

I am not real well versed when it comes to trouble shooting engines. I am more of an oil change and lube job mechanic, but I learn fast.

Thanks for you advise.

You need to determine if it along the piston or the block to be sure if it coming from the block or the head.

(quoted from post at 17:33:45 05/17/11) So moving the piston up in the hole would help determine more accurately where the antifreeze is coming from right?

Thanks, Gene

Yes, that would help, but the sad news is that you need to do a full tear down anyway.

Two choices here one the block and sleeve are cracked on that hole or the head is cracked on that hole . So Gene to find out just what ya have to deal with it is going to be a tear down . Now if ya want to just dump the tractor you may be able to cheat by draining the cooling system and run some cooling system cleaner thru it a couple times and flushing it then put water in it and run it getting it good and HOT then pull the plug on the hole that is showen leakage and dump a can of K&R block sealant in it and run it for a while keeping it hot then after maybe 20 min. shut it down pull the drain plug on the rad and block and let her set for a couple days . Make sure ya clean everything that that stuff touches as it will make a mess. May work may not.

Well, we have had this ole M since I was,? well, I can't ever remember not having it, and I am 56.

It has a good working added Power steering that I can barley remember dad and my uncles putting on it. And it has a functional M&W hand clutch that I also remember being added as a kid.

It's staying, whatever it takes to fix it.

Thanks for the tips. Looks like I need to get busy.

What does the plug look like?? Yes if the piston was all the way to the top and it was say a head gasket problem then you might see it on the plug

Before going to extremes of things start with the easy. Make sure your head and top of the block are even, this can be verified with a straight edge and feeler gauges. A machine shop can easily check the head for you, along with a magnaflux to check for cracks. I have a 450 that was doing the same thing was getting a few teaspoons of coolant in the oil a month. In my case it was a blown head gasket caused by a warped uneven head. Had it plained and new gasket and been good now for a month, knock on wood. I would start with that in my opinion.

I'm with Andrew. When you go nuts and tear into it and don't see anything then what do you do? I couldn't see my MD's blown head gasket when I took the head off and looked around.

Edit - not sure how you would know it was a head gasket though. My MD was leaking outside the block.
