Flushing an H

I have the H drained right now and would like to flush the cooling system before putting in new antifreeze. There was a lot of rust in the system. I did not pull the cover on the left side of the motor and see if that was sludged up.

Any ideas on flushing?

What I do is fill them up with vinegar run them till good and warm. Let them cool off enough that you do not get burned. Drain then let cool the rest of the way and back flush them by way of the block drain. I have a pipe/hose hook up I rigged just for doing that.

I bought the cooling system flush stuff (It's right by the coolant at most stores) and ran that. I followed all the directions on the bottle.
I let the tractor run with a hose running fresh water into the system with the drain open to flush it really well.

Will that soften the rust?

Should I pull the coolant plate and the block and manually clean that out?

Pull the coolant plate and replace it with a new one. You will find it to be completely corroded.

I can not say any thing about the plate but can say this. Vinegar is a mild acid and any acid will eat rust. You could also use Muratic (sp) acid but it is a bit strong and if you have any thin places in the system you will know where they where because they stand a good chance of leaking and that is why I use vinegar

Can't say what is in the magic cleaner. It didn't have any major acid warning so it must not be muratic acid. I didn't see/retain the ingrediants so I can't really say what is in it.

I have heard poor reports about the fit and finish of the replacement coolant plates. I don't know who has good or bad ones or anything like that. I do know a guy that got one from a major supplier and the holes didn't line up with the holes in the block. The second one they sent him was close enough he could egg out the holes and make it work.

Best way would be to follow CNKS advice. Washing soda is also a cleaning agent that can be used but needs to be thoroughly rinsed and neutralized. Allan.
