M Farmall 3-Point Lift Capacity

Just posting a follow up to say that I just had dual 4" hydraulic cylinders installed on my homemade M 3 point hitch to replace the 2" cylinders that were on it. The purpose of this was to increase the weight that I could pick up. Well, now, just as many of you had said, the ol' girl will pick up a 1300 pound hay bale although the front end won't stay on the ground. I was a little sceptical that the puny Lift-All pump could lift that much, but it does. Thanks for all your comments and advice. Long live the M Farmall (and this is coming from a diehard John Deere man).

That's like my 140. It toys with a 5' disc in first gear, but it is a pretty good load in second. The problem occurs when I have to pick it up. While the hydraulics pick the 600 lb. disc up fine, I can't hardly steer!
Good job fixing your lift on your M! SF

My SM has the 'mag'pump.with one 3 1/2"cylinder it will lift way more than the front will hold down.I once picked a LOADED 300 gal sprayer.

They get real light in the front end real fast. I have about 700# hangin off the front of my SMTA so I can steer when I've got the plow on my 3point.

Thanks for everyone's reply. Ben, I really like that set up for those suitcase weights. I was thinking of a way that I could do something like that myself. I was trying to back up an uneven hill with that bail on the stinger and the front end off the ground. Bout went sideways into a little ditch, and that's when things got spooky. Looked like a good way to flip the ol' gal and end up dead. Still, I was impressed that the little Lift-All pump would do it. Would this mean that the pump must be in pretty good shape internally, or would a pump working at 1/2 capacity still lift a 1300 pd. bail behind twin 4" cylinders? Thanks.

By installing cylinders with twice the bore size as the old cylinders you have quadrupled the lifting capacity, so even if the pump was worn out and only putting out 1/4 of it's original pressure, it would still lift the bale. You could of used 3" cylinders and it still would have worked I bet.

How does the 3pt plow working for you? How many bottoms? I"ve heard it is impossible to do a decent plow job with an aftermarket 3pt, but that field looks pretty darned good to me.
