H live hydraulic

I am moving along on the live hydraulic conversion on the H. I am starting to put it back together. The timing cover off the 300 was the same part number as the H, except the 300 cover was R2.

Are you 100% sure the 2 parts are the exact same?? One could be a faction of an inch taller etc to make parts fit and if it was me I would probably go with the one off the 300 just because of the fact the part number is different i the R2

THe bolt pattern on the housing surface for the Hydraulic pump mount has differently spaced holes. The top hole is at least 1/2 bolt hole out of place for the pump. Fit up the pump and you will clearly see the difference. If the pump fits either, the front cover was changed to a newer casting, or the engine is newer than the rest of the tractor. Without looking for your original post, I think your chassis serial is high enough to have the correct cover, unless I am confusing you with someone else. And R2 usually would be downward compatible, R2 will sub for R1, but R1 may not sub for R2. Since you have a 300 cover it is immaterial.

Look at the oil fill screen and area to see the change from R1 to R2. IH changed the front cover bolt pattern on H tractors built in part of july 1950 and later. Pump will work on both R1 and R2. H covers with the old bolt pattern have a 4 digit cast # ending in D?.

It's been almost 25 years since I did the same thing to my 1949 H ser. #301962. This was neccesary after the pump began leaking through the bolt holes that I (as a seventeen year old mechanic) had egg-shaped and reamed out enough to bolt onto the original front cover. (it worked for 3 years before I needed to learn the right way) I had no trouble finding the correct front cover but The big problem was finding the intermediate plate that goes between the block and the front cover. I don't know if you will need to change that on a 1950 H but I just wanted to mention that it has a nut welded to the plate. That was the one that was so far out of alignment on mine that caused all of the trouble. You are probably already aware of this, but I just thought I would mention it.
