cub won.t stat

1948 farmall cub won"t start. No power to the coil. The switch has one wire from the voltage regulater and one to the coil, when I try to start there is no spark. If I jump a wire from the battery to the - side of the coil(positive ground) it starts and runs fine. I cleaned up the contact on the voltage regulater now sometimes I have power to the switch sometimes not. My first thought was to run a wire straight from the batt to the switch to bypass the vr. When I do this it starts easily. It was running fine till this week then this started. Should I replace the voltage regulator or am I missing something?

I almost bet if you trace the wire from the V.R. Ya there should be another wire going there and the switch hook up was done there just because it was an easy place to hook to. So what I am saying is that place on the V.R. most likely should be hot at all times and for some reason it is not as in a broken wire or missing wire

I will ad to Old's info that the switches go bad regularly (after 50+years) so jump the switch to see if it is intermittant. The L terminal on the Regulator (and the Bat terminal on the Regulator as well) are hot all the time. Jim

The switch may be bad but I took the wires off of the switch and jumped them then hit the starter.I did this about 6 or 8 times right together and about 4-6 times it started and ran fine. After the times it wouldn't start I jumped from the battery to the - on the coil and it started just fine so I think it is the terminal on the V R. Tomorrow I am going to hook a hot from the ammeter to the switch and from the switch to the coil and see how it works. If it runs fine and charges the battery I will go with this setup for now. Do you guys see any problems with this setup?

Thanks alot,
Mike
