Farmall A front gear case leak

I have a 42 Farmall A. I noticed when I was removing the clutch pedal clevis from the rod, it looked pretty wet inside the housing. This is the front of the gear case. Is there a seal in there to be replaced? Can I access it by separating the gear case from the front housing? Or do I have to tear inside it. Thanks.

The oil could be coming from one of two places:

1. The rear engine seal.
2. The transmission input shaft seal.

You'll have to split the tractor to find out which it is and replace it. Both can be replaced without tearing into the engine or transmission, but you will want to separate the torque tube from the transmission for easiest access to the transmission input.

Good info. thanks! It is definitely not the engine rear main, because I have the engine off. lol. I'm restoring this tractor. I noticed there is some kind of flange connection for that output shaft. Is this a two piece seal in there? Thanks again.

Yes split it at the front of the tranny and while you replace the seal check the bearing also it doesent take very much play in that bearing to make the tranny noisy. The bearing is rite behind the seal and easy to change.
