IH 340 seems stuck in gear - now what?

It was running around just fine for about 30 minutes now it"s doing something odd

It has 5 speeds and something called a reverser - that is you can go backwards in any gear

If the reverser is engaged - either forward or reverse and any gear is selected it will die when I release the clutch. Kinda like starting a truck in third gear.

If the reverser is engaged and no gear is selected it will go forward or backward but tries to die, I was able to limp back to the shed this way but it acts like it"s in high gear

if both the reverser and the gear are in neutral it will idle.

Any thoughts why all of a sudden it"s "locking up" like this? The guy I bought it from is thinking it"s the rear hydraulic not in a neutral position but that doesn"t seem to be it.

Remove the gearshift lever and center all three shift forks.

The nub on the gearshift is worn and slipped out of the fork during a shift. It's now stuck in one gear or another, and every time you shift it, you put it into two gears at once.

It's a common problem with old tractors. You need to be more careful and deliberate with your shifting for now. The real fix is to build up the nub with weld and grind it down to its original size and shape.

thanks that seems to have done the trick

there was a fibrous gasket underneath the shifter that pretty much self disintegrated - do I need to get similar material one or can I use a "gasket in a tube" sorta stuff
