1939 M- LP TO GAS

I just read on previous page of 560 LP to gas and motor ruined. I'm changing my 39 M-LP back to gas now, with regular gas tank and M rebuild carb.Am leaving Head and Intake on . I know pistons are flat. This tractor converted in 1953 to LP. Will it still need low ash oil and timing pointer set to 1st notch on crank pully? Notch is now 1" past pointer.I think this tractor should run ok. Am I right on any of this? Thanks for any anfo. Buck

Buck, First let me say I am sadden to lose another l.p.I think they are special! Having said that I believe you will be ok,just make sure your carb is good and you will have to retime it make sure your distibuter weights are free and advancing properly. Also need 1/4" plug on manifold just above carb. As for oil use good quality 30 wt. Just a thought, think how much more difficult and expenseve it would be to convert it to l.p.vs. gas assuming it has all the vintage ensign equipment, kinda puts the value of l.p.in perspective. My 2 cents worth. Tony

I thought about changing this tractor for a long time. It belonged to my uncle fm 1964 to 2004, when he passed away. I've had it since then and only one who knows how to operate it. The almost grown, grand sons show no interest. To cut the chance of someone getting blown up,is the reason for change. I feel anyone can put gas in and drive it. Yes, the whole system is origional and just as IH dealer converted it. The Id tags are still on it and Ensin equiptment all look and work as new . I did put new origional filter element in a yr ago. very hard to find. Yes I will need to do something with it.Everything off tractor now and that tank is verrry heavy. M's are my first love.Trade? HUMMMM. Rebuilt 1952 S M 10 yrs ago. Thanks Men , It hurt to take that system off. Buck

Buck, I too am sadden that you are changing back to gas from LP. I, like to others would leave it LP. Just for....C.Y.A. sake take a boat load of pics just in case you decide to put it back at a later time. so you have a road map on what goes where! It has lived on LP a lot longer than it ever did on Gas.
Many yrs ago I help convert a old SM LP conversion (non-factory) back to gas it ran ok I guess, but it never seemed to like gas that much, on LP it ran a lot better and smoother.

I have probaly burned as much LP as anyone here in tractors, cotton pickers, fork lifts and trucks and I would reccomend converting to gasoline if you plan on using tractor. LP is great if you are set for it but fueling can be a PITA if you are not and some of them do not like to start in cold weather no matter what you do for them some will start as good or better than gasoline though.

I converted my 1940 M back to gasoline and it runs fine did not run as well until I traded LP manifold for gasoline manifold. Set time by ear until it ran to suit me swo do not know how much advance if any it has.
