6 Volt Battery

Would it be possible to "fry" or otherwise ruin a 6 volt battery by inadvertentaly hooking it up as "negative" ground? I did this on my Super C last October...when it wouldn't turn over this week, I got a new battery, only to discover that I had hooked up as "negative" ground, not positive as I know it should be. Also, could I have damaged the generator/voltage regulator in the process??
Thanks, Cmore

Of course the regulator on that tractor is made for Pos gnd and changing polarity doesent do the reg any good its probably fried.

The battery or generator do not care whether they are positive or negative ground, the voltage regulators life may be shortened if it says 6V positive ground on the bottom.

what would fry it? have seen batt. installed backwards and nothing happened. amp meter would show backwards.

On some regulators, I think the individual sets of contacts are made of different materials. The damage is not immediate by any means. I accidently made my C negative ground (brain to eye malfunction). It still charges, ammeter reads backwards. I don't use it much, but it has been that way 2-3 years. If I used it everyday or even every week, I imagine I would need a new regulator.
