40 wt engine oil

If my 1256 oil pressure is a little lower than would like, would running 40 wt rotella oil help (not 15W-40 but strait 40 wt)? Any chance of damage to the engine?

thick oil will bring the pressure up when cold, but after running it will thin and the oil pressure will drop. why not pull the pan, drop a rod cap and have a look, chances are the crank is still round, and a new set of bearing, rod and mains will fix it.

As Cole said SAE 40 is not going to help you when the engine is warmed up. There is a 20W-50 available. I'm not saying to use it, that is up to you.

I tried the 20W-50 trick in a Cub. It didn't work.

Put some of that Lucas "Engine Honey" in too... That didn't help either.

well the first thing to do is get a master guage on it and get some actual psi numbers while cold, warmed up and working. then compare them to the spec's. "little lower than would like " is not actual facts, so cant give actual advise.this is where to start before any engine tear down.

OK. A little lower than I would like is at the low end of the spec. A little over 40 when cold. A little above 35 when hot (working hard at 1800-2000 rpm). That is off a pressure gage hooked up where the oil supply goes up to the turbo. Spec calls for 38-55 at full RPM.

At operating temp they will both have the same viscosity, so you gain nothing except a "drier" start by using 40W instead of 15W40.

Could be MANY reasons for oil pressure,(but we all know pressure is just a measurement of restriction!)

If the oil isnt changing the reading, then it is either bearing clearance,or oil pump relief.
