Two Seal Questions

I am replacing all seals in the diff/trans of a '51 H. I purchased the brake drum shaft seal from Napa, part number #23244 which I found on another post on this site. Looks to be pretty close match to the original, but not a very tight fit on the shaft. I really don't want leaks and at $33.00 a piece, I don't really want to experiment. How tight should these seals be on the shaft? It moves almost freely. Second question, in replacing the brake pedal shaft seal, how do you get the seal over the keyway on the shaft without damaging the seal? Thanks! GH

First question, you have the wrong seal, it should not be loose. Second question, remove the key. A good bearing/seal place can cross almost any seal. Otherwise, pay the price and get them from CaseIH.

To add to what CNKS said, put ONE wrap of plastic electrical tape over the keyway so the sharp edges of the keyslot will not cut the seal. Oil the tape and slide the seal on the shaft.

they should have some drag if you push them with two fingers and thumb. remove the keyway, you dont push seals over keyways to distort the rubber and have a leak.

Thanks for all the replys and great info. Sorry for my ignornance on the keyway issue. For some reaon I thought they were cast onto the shaft and not removeable. In any event, I removed the keyway, used electrical tape over the slot and wraped the saft with on layer of plastic Saran wrap. Worked like a charm. As for the larger bull gear seal, I bit the bullet and got the seal from the IH dealer. Actuially I used two per side and filled the second one with grease to keep it from drying out. Thanks for all the help! Greg
