turbocharged 450

Hi, Ive been building a turbo kit for my 450 and i was wondeirng if there was anyone else who had experimented with this? Im still working on it, so im not really sure what to expect. Any input would be much appreciated.

Many years back a guy south of me did that to his 450 and the end results were yuck yucko phoooy, made lots of spare engine parts.

A guy around here has a 450 with a turbo. He is still trying to seal up all the exhaust leaks so the real outcome is yet to be seen. Right now his power range is not that much more then a strong 450 with a set of domed pistons, however he does have a fair amount of leak by.

I know a guy with a M and a 281 ci motor ported 8060 head, 450 cam and a Garrett T3 turbo its a draw threw set up air goes threw carb then into turbo then into intake manifold. Im not sure the hp but I would be willing to bet around 110hp or better at 1650 RPM. Works great for pulling but not so good for a working tractor it gets hot fast under a load. Both the intake and exhaust manifolds are custom made from stainless steel.

thats for the input guys! Ive given keystone turbo a call and they said a safe range to run it is about 10-15 psi, over that and you could have a problem. They claim they had an M with their kit dynoed over 120hp at 1800rpms i believe. Im curious how a 450 will turn out, considering its a larger displacement engine and mine is set up for pulling, so im turning more rpms than that. It seems like theres alot of stories about them blowing up and alot saying they work good and shouldnt hurt it. Im still skeptical about it, so thats why i figured id ask what you guys thought about it. Thanks!

I would do a bit of research on how to deal with the heating up problems associated with using a turbo on a gas tractor, a turbo builds heat, anytime you compress air it causes heat, consider what pistons & valves to use, and how to keep them cool, an oil cooler & charge air cooler would help, you will need a much bigger air cleaner system as you are moving more CFM of air into and out of the engine at the same RPMS.
There is a bit more to it than just slapping on a turbo, gilmer belt drive superchargers, back in the day, was a much cooler way of getting ponies out of a gasser.

A guy that pulls with us has a Keystone turbo on his M. He can place in the 8500 lb class with it, works real nice. Water injection is a good idea if you take the boost levels above there recomendations.

You have to figure what your compression ratio is going to be with the turbo. Thats not to hard to figure. Then you have to look at the possibility that your boost will up that ratio to the point that your engine fires by detonation rather than by spark. So you may be looking at lowering the boost, inercooling and or warter injection to control that. Plus you have to make sure the bottem end of the engine will take the added stress. Add in that the tranny just may not be up to the applied power. Heck back in the day the 450 was close to the top in IH HP ranges. That tranny isn't going to take 100+ ponies for too long.

So you think i should look into putting water injection to keep it a bit cooler? Ive been considering it, and ive planned on putting water/meth inj on my cummins this summer so maybe i should go ahead and do both. What do you figure safe EGTs are to run these motors at?

You never said what fuel your 450 was burning. That would make a difference. Don't they have aluminum pistons? If so I know my 7.3 L isn't supposed to get much hotter than 1250 for very long. My buddies 466 in a Hot Farm "4440" runs up to 1500 for 300' at time and we haven't seen problems yet over 4 summers of pulling.

its not a 450D, just a 450 with the 281ci gas engine. I believe it has stock pistons, but i havent looked at it good enough yet to see if it might have firecraters. Im considering having custom pistons made along with some other engine mods later down the road. Does anyone know what the max EGTs these stock pistons can handle?

Call the Keystone Turbo guy and see what he recommends. You would probably be better off with one of his kits than reinventing the wheel on your own.
