IH W6 Starter problem

Im looking for some help with a puzzling problem - Have a 1946 IH W6 - tractor is a TVO / Kerosene model and takes a 3 bolt starter - I bought a new one which is meant to be suitable for a W6 but it doesnt work, the seller swapped for another one and still same problem - the starter spins fine but the bendix doesnt engage correctly and grates off the flywheel - it will start the tractor maybe 1 time in every 10 and I dont want to try too much as it sounds bad - does anyone know if the kerosene W6 takes a different starter to gas?

May want to check that the 3 bolt drive end housing is the correct one. W6 used a different one from a more common 3 bolt end housing used on some other IH tractors. Gas and kerosene are the same.

Get the old starter back before they send it off to the rebuilders, and count the number of teeth on the gear. Compare to the starters you are buying.

Delco numbers, W6 non diesel starter 1107444, or use starter with the end housing # 1881731 that bolts to the W6 tractor housing and starter drive # 1868804. Thats the same drive used on M and others so pretty common. Don't know of any IH tractors besides the W6 series that used end housing 1881731.
Suspect you may be getting starters with end housing 1930639 which would result in less gear mesh.

Think TS 1104 is a 3 bolt that uses a sadle switch on it. For some later super tractors. Without looking it up I think that starter fits the following W series, SW6 gas with channel frame and SW6TA. They will bolt up but the end housing moves the starter shaft a different distance from the flywheel starter gear.

ours isnt a super, just W6 kerosene / tvo but im sure something doesnt match up.. i have no idea how to proceed though.. i would order a different drive / bendix but its difficult to tell which one!

Out of curiosity I searched the web for a W6 starter or drive housing. Found a lot of wrong info from suppliers that say they fit a w6 but no starter or parts. Did find a rebuilt listed in a old book for the W6 starter # 1107444 at Valubuilt tractor parts, don't know if there still around or not.
The starter you need fits regular 6 series tractors and SW6 serials # 501 to 3950. Super starters after 3950 will bolt on but as you found out they won't mesh right.
You can use a diesel starter from a W6, MD and stage 1 SMD on that tractor if you just want something to work and are going to use 12 volts.

planning to use 12V for sure as its a magneto ignition and no generator / alternator etc .. would you be able to tell me part no of the Wd6 or MD starter?

IH # 61061DA, Delco # 1108913. Warning this starter is larger than the gas and you may have to loosen or remove some things to get it on. Also probably will cost more. Never put one on a W6, but there a close fit on some MD tractors. Starter just has a post for the power cable so a starter switch will be needed between battery and starter.

one thing that confuses me - this seems to be 12/13 tooth starter but anywhere I look online is saying 10 tooth ccw? is there anyway to tell by counting the number of teeth on the ring gear / flywheel?
