1952 Super M Head #

MY 1952 S M Head # is 362174-R1.There is no cylinder head breather tube or connection at back of head to connect to air cleaner, but it does have inlet fm. gov. pipe. I tapped back of valve cover and added pipe to air cleaner. Works good. SM parts book shows 356994-R92. What have I got here. The block # is 356980R1, books shows 356981R93. Compression about 145 lb. per cylinder. Thanks, Buck Clayton

Randy answered the head question. 356994R92 is the part # for a replacement head assembly with valves, springs, spring retainers and rotocaps. That head casting is 8574DC. 356981R93 is a replacement block assembly. Casting # on that block is 365586R1.
356980R1 engine blocks came in SM, SMTA, part of the 400 tractors and W series in the same time frames.
To see if that block is probably original to the SM. Check the date code on the block or see if that engine serial # was installed in a tractor the same month tractor was built.

Thanks for Id of 400 on the head. Tractor had a 400 radiator when I bought it and it was about 1" too high where hood and grill met.The S M is a early one. All codes are X 4-March. Serial # is 2183 on clutch housing and motor # is about 2245, so is origional engine. all codes on tractor were made in march 1952 and thats when they started selling them. The head really had me. Still don't know why no drilled connection on back for air cleaner connection . Do thank you guys for this info. This tractor sure has a lot of power. Buck

The air cleaner vent tube was moved to the valve cover on the later engines rather than the passageway in the back of the head.
